Just to settle an argument ...

Is search engine opitmisation marketing ?

I know its off topic, but there are some people with an academic
understanding of marketing here who will voice an opinion!

Sure, if the website is a marketing vehicle, that is, if its purpose is to
position an organization and its products/services, to generate leads, to
create sales opportunities. If so, then seo is as much a part of marketing
as wordsmithing, graphics creation, campaign planning, product planning,
etc. etc. etc.

You can make a case that everything is marketing. Having the right product
is marketing. Having a good product is marketing. Making sure that people
are aware of the product is marketing.

If SEO isn't marketing then it's either an academic exercise or a
competitive sport.

I should say it most definitely is.

Did this 'someone' also manage to explain why he thought that PR is not
part of marketing too?

Marketing: Adapting a product to the customer's needs.

SEO: Adapting your web pages to Google's whims.

Naa, I think he was getting confused with Advertising vs PR ... It came
as a response to a comment I made (looking at adverts) which said skills
needed - Search Engine Optimisation, PPC, Web Marketing, Content
Management - I guess I made a comment were all four were really part of
web marketing...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Humour aside, you may find marketing is communicating to a potential
customer how their need may be best satisfied by your product.

No. It includes ensuring that the product meets the customer's needs. It
needs to be two way communication to really be valuable. Otherwise it's
salesmanship. The two are different. I can do marketing, I can't be a
salesman, that's because I'm psychologically ill equipped to sell people
rubbish they don't want.
