I wonder what operating system is the right choice for hosting a few ASP.Net
web sites (Public web sites) with MySQL database, and what licensing issues
it could have.

I plan to buy a server and send it to a host company for hosting a few
public web sites. The following is the possible options:

1). Windows Server 2003 Web Edition and a MySQL database. This option cost
less. However, I may need to install a SQL Server database in the future,
which is not allowed by this version of operating system.

2). Windows Server 2003 for small business with either MySQL or SQL Server
database. But I am not sure if there is any license issue.

3). Window Server 2003 Enterprise with either MySQL or SQL Server database.
This option allows more computer memory to be installed. This is most costly
solution.

Thanks for any recommendation.

I think you need to make the call as to whether you will stick with
MySQL forever or will use SQL Server.

If you bet that MySQL is sufficient then Web Edition + MySQL is the
most cost effective solution.

If you ever need SQL Server, then Enterprise Edition + SQL Server ends
up being the most cost effective.

Thus, this is really your call...

I suspect you'll have to read into whether SBS is a "cheaper" way to
get IIS6+SQL without Enterprise Edition. I'm not a licensing expert,
but SBS always seemed like a bargain for people to get started, and it
nicely unlocks into the full Enterprise Edition when you grow into it,
so you just pay for what you need.
