Hi

I need to park a CD's worth of image files for a few weeks. (i.e. c.
600MB).
Anyone recommend anywhere to do so for free?
Speed of access/reliability/tech support/security } ar not very
important.

If you have a hotmail / live account, check in your services for
SkyDrive. They give you 1GB of storage for free.

So what is wrong with burning it to a CD and putting it
somewhere secure (like a safe deposit box if the data is especially
valuable)?

There are quite a number of companies that provide on-line storage
solutions, and many will provide some free storage. I have a list of storage
companies that provide free storage at
http://www.cryer.co.uk/resources/virtualstorage.htm. Personally I'd
recommend DriveHQ, but there are others. Take you pick.

Hope this helps.

CDs not good for sharing.
Slower on postage etc.
CDs rather slow to burn.
In truth CD's are really slightly too small nowadays too.

It seems to me that you said that you had a CD's worth of
material. So how is a CD too small for this?

I thought you were going to STORE it, not mail it.

If it is a one time thing, then what's the difference. I can
burn CDs in a very short time. I rarely do it, though.

The counterpart is that you would be using one of these free
online backup services that would have all of your important data and
be able to access it and compromise your privacy.

Regards,

Fred

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDrive

"It allows a user to access a virtual drive stored in a Gmail e-mail
account by causing the contents of the Gmail account to appear as a new
network share on the user's workstation. In order to use this add-on, the
user needs a Gmail e-mail account. The add-on enables the user to use the
standard Windows desktop file copy and paste commands to transfer files to
and from the Gmail account as if it was a drive on the user's computer."

However, it appears that gDrive is perhaps still a rumour, and not yet
available (it's not listed as a facility on Google).

I think John meant Gmail Drive which is a program residing on the local
computer and uses Gmail for storage:

Sounds like something Google will eventually get round to blocking ..
looking on the page it states: "Be aware that support for this tool may
suspend at any time if Google decides to block its use."

Actually, this is an important point, not about Gmail Drive but about any
on-line storage provider, and that is simply that if they go out of business
then you loose all your files. I maintain a list of storage providers, and
have received quite a few emails from people who have used one and then lost
everything when the company goes out of business. For this reason I
recommend that:

1. you only use well established names and not newcomers to the market.

2. you don't rely on it as your only copy.

Basically on-line storage providers can be a great way of sharing files but
I wouldn't recommend them as a backup.

Sorry, rant over.

Not to the OP:
"I need to park a CD's worth of image files for a few weeks."

Moreover, the software has been around for a few years.

I would, but like you wrote, I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket. I
am considering Amazon's S3.
