Hi,

I've got a web site running on IIS on Win2000 and I want to move it to
another same spec server. Is there a quick and easy way of doing this?

The site is XML based with a parser installed etc.

Tim

Should be as simple as copying the site to the other computer and then just
making sure that if you needed to add an XML mimetype that you add it to the
2000 computer as well

Quick Answer: No.

Long Answer:

There are several Items to consider when migrating a web site from one
server to another. (this is not an inclusive list, there may be other
considerations depending on your site.)
1. Content
2. Metabase settings.
3. COM Components
4. FrontPage Server Extensions.
5. Database connections.

CONTENT: It is pretty simple to move content from one server to another.
However, all your content may not be in the same location so make sure to
get all of it .

METABASE: In IIS 5.0 certain data in the metabase is encrypted using the
Machine keys. This makes it very difficult (nearly impossilbe) to move the
metabase from one machine to another.

COM Components: You will likely have to install your COM Components
manually on the new server.

FRONTPAGE: If your site makes use of FPSE you will need to apply the server
extensions to the new server. There is one Plus to migrating sites if you
use Frontpage, you could publish the site to the new server. This would
take care of Content, Metabase and FPSE all at once.

DATABASES: You will need to make sure that the new server can contact any
and all databases that your site uses.

You may be able to find some third party utilties to help with the
migration. Also if you were going to Migrate to IIS 6.0 there is a
Migration tool that ships with the IIS 6.0 resource kit.
