is this one ending .uk (.co.uk .org.uk ) - I only ask because there
are further fees, payable to Nominet, if that is the case, because they
add a few levels of burocracy in "transfers" - even if a company change
their name there is now some fee involved (though under 50 pounds).

You might consider it safer, then, to do the transaction via Ebay, get
the seller to make a private sale to you (I believe that may be easy
enough to do). There certainly are escrow services (I don't know
what fees are payable - never sold anything but have bought low cost
items).

If it is a .uk then I can certainly recommend a UK-based firm which may
be worth using to get advice about the best way to go about this. For
a start, the UK system has something called an IPSTAG (which can be
seen when you do a search for a domain name at
www.nic.uk (aka
www.nominet.org.uk ) so a positive sign would be to get the seller
to change that tag, to one of a firm *you* would use in future for the
domain - it controls which firm is responsible for billing, and once a
change has been made, the old owner/ registration firm would not easily
be able to alter it back...

Sorry, not on an international level. With .org/com/etc it is much,
much, easier IMO. Hope the above helps - I'll also send a copy to
you by e-mail so hopefully if you need to, you'll get my e-mail
address and we can discuss it further if you wish.
[ second posting - my ISP's news server didn't accept this yesterday
night - did try sending it by e-mail too, so not sure if your mail
address is one you use for trapping junk off spammers... Peter ]
