Everyone around here seems to condemn FP out of hand.

I understand why to an extent - all the junk it creates if you use anything
more than its basic facilities - but what is wrong with it if you avoid
these facilities?.

Personally I find it quite good as a text editor, table creation, checking
navigation links and its web publishing feature is superior to any basic FTP
programme IMHO (accepting the fact that the server has to have FP extensions
installed but that doesn't seem to be a major issue nowadays.

I think you need to take a look at FP2003. MS removed a lot of crap from it
and put in some actually useful features. Not quite the same animal as
previous versions.

I love 'Frontpage 2000', just strip out a little of the 'bloated' HTML
after creating a page.

It's wonderful.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

FP extesions are terrible, they truly are, this is from an experienced
designer, host and user...

I am not anti WYSWIG but I would advocate going with something like Namo (no
experience) or DW... because these can produce good code and they do have
good text editors built in too... Just would avoid FP like the plague...

Funnily enough, the DHTML effects produced in windows help WERE PRODUCED IN
DW!!!

Hand coding - boring, laborious but has advantages...

But you don't have to use 'Frontpage extensions'.

Just configure the program so that *extensions* aren't used.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

No real problem as such except that there is a prevalence in this group (and
many others) to trash all MS software. I'm not trying to fly any flag for
MS, I accept that there are many problems with their sodtware and I share
other people's concerns about their dominance of the software market, but
IMHO their software generally is not as bad as many 'experts' make it out to
be.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I use and make a living using MS products. I find them pretty good. The
occasional problems with their software are not show stoppers. Every
software suffers from some kind of problems. The MS products I use, FP is
not one of them, are pretty reliable.

I heard FP 2003 is much better than previous versions. You can always try
it and see for yourself.

If you want to try a few free WYSIWYG html editors, check the link in my
sig.

Ahh - I see.

 > I'm not trying to fly any flag for MS,

me neither - software is as software does. I see little point in bringing
politics to the mix.

 > I accept that there are many problems with their
 > sodtware

not sure they have exclusive rights to that.

 > and I share other people's concerns about their dominance of
 > the software market,

piffle - market force drives 'dominance' whatever that means. AIUI apache
has a larger share of the webserver market than IIS as an example of one.

 > but IMHO their software generally is not as bad
 > as many 'experts' make it out to be.

perhaps you need to filter the evangelical protagonists - whatever their
viewpoint. you may be surprised how little real discussion there is on the
subject.

I use a whole load of MS software (and others) - if it didn't do the job I
wouldn't use it. For me FP falls into the latter category.

YMMV and obviously does.

It isn't just that, I can list reasons as to avoid FP as long as your arm,
its really an ammateur tool to create a web presence rather than a
proffesional tool to develop proffesional websites.

This isn't just a casual observation - I was teaching two classes once, one
FrontPage and one Dreamweaver, I do agree its better than it used to be, but
its NOT a proffesional standard tool...
