I bought a domain for my sister, who tells me that she doesn't want to
put up a personal website, but would really love to be able to use the
domain for popmail and webmail if possible. (The domain is registered at
gandi.net, which already gives her 5 email redirects plus a catch-all
redirect, but she prefers pop and webmail.)

What is the best affordable way for her to have a couple of addresses
at her domain that are accessible both as Popmail and webmail?

Get a free pop/webmail account with a free email service (like hotmail)
and redirect to that account.

Pay for hosting someplace and point the domain there.

free accounts won't let her messages appear as from her domain. She
specifically wants popmail/webmail for her domain, which is what I'm
asking about. Any ideas?

If she sets up email forwarding to a free email account, the sender is
sending the message to her.RemoveThis@herdomain.com (the sender does not know it will
then be redirected to the free hosting account).

When she sends mail through her pop3 mail client, she can configure the
From and Reply-to addresses to be her.RemoveThis@herdomain.com.

When she send mail using the hotmail webinterface it will show as coming
from her hotmail account. This is the only time it won't be the way you
want.

Sure, if you look at the message header you can see the routing of the
message, but how many people look at that.

If you want a complete solutions that only ever shows her domain, then the
only way is to pay to host the domain.

Just get a low-cost hosting deal, you don't need to use the hosting. Chuck
up a holding page if it makes the host feel happy.

God knows they are cheap enough.

She uses Yahoo, which offers excellent free webmail but not free
popmail, its paid version of popmail does not permit her to use the
'From' as anything other than her Yahoo account. moreiver, I don't trust
free popmail providers, as I don't know of any ones which have excellent
uptime and haven't gone belly-up from financial distress. I want to get
her what she's asking for -- so I am looking for recommendations for
paid popmail-&-webmail that she can use with her domain name.

It can be an email-only solution, or, as some have already suggested, it
can be a barebones hosting solution with mail as part of the deal, but I
am looking for specific recommendations that provide this.

Why pay?

For retrieving Yahoo mail using your favorite email client, use
http://sourceforge.net/projects/yahoopops/

"YahooPOPs! is an application which emulates a POP3/SMTP mail server and
provides free POP3 and SMTP access to Yahoo! Mail. It does not depend on
Yahoo's POP3/SMTP mail server. You can use a mail client of your choice!"

For sending Yahoo mail using your favorite email cline, use
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sendymail/

"Sendymail allows you to send e-mails through your Yahoo! Mail account,
using your favorite e-mail client."

oneandone.co.uk do a "domain mail plus" package which I think would give your
sister what she wants. It's about £7 a year.

Hi Carlo,

We do an e-mail only hosting deal for £4 per year - details at
http://www.purplecloud.net/hosting/packages.php - this includes POP/IMAP
mailboxes with webmail plus some other features.

Kind regards,
James

I'm happy with oneandone in general, but I use them as a webhost so I don't
have this particular package.

If you are willing to pay we do an expensive mail hosting service including
web mail etc. for $50 per year - includes domain name (TLD only not cc)

Thanks, but I already got her a domain. There are a bunch of hosts that
offer $35/year hosting packages, but I'd prefer to pay only for what she
says she needs. If she had Earthlink she could use their pop and webmail
for all auto-forwarded email, for free, but she's using another ISP.
