I am selling bearded dragons on my website, which has my own domain
name. When someone searches "bearded dragon" I would like my website
to come up first (ideally!) or close to it. Right now my site is
appearing several pages down in a Google search.

What controls the order in which the results appear? (Actually, how
did Google find my site with the search words "bearded dragon"?) Is
there anything I can do to control when/how my website appears in a
web search?

Thanks.

Howdy,

Quite frankly, I don't believe even the Google programmers can answer your
question. In floundering around trying to win the popularity contest
amongst the various search engines, Google and others have sabotaged the
very folks they depend on; the professional web designers.

Don't try to fight the system. It will only give you ulcers. Concentrate
on making your web site as honest, user friendly and informative as you can.
If you only get 100 visitors a month and 10 of those place an order, you are
doing great and it will keep growing. Those fighting to get 10,000 hits and
may have one sale to show for it are not going to stay in business.

Chris, Hi

I am a legitimate business site and I feel google has kicked me in the
head, with their latest dance. I see you moderate biz.marketplace, I
just posted this and hope maybe you can help me. As it pertains to the
advice you listed above, but is not working.

I am searching for free advice as to how to get listed back on Google
search engine. I have a yahoo store call BearlandersTradingCo.com. I
sell Native Amercian Indian jewerly and gifts. I listed on the front
page or second page in the search listings that pertained to my
merchandise. Now, since Google did their last dance in Jan or Feb
2004, I am no where to be found on any important search terms. I do of
course pay for Google ad words. Probly just what they had intended
with their last dance. I tried to submit my site since being dropped
and maybe that is what has hurt me? I have now tried to modifiy my
front page with links to different pages on my site. Below is how my
front page now reads. I have been hammered with spam offers to get
listed, but learned my lesson in the past. I hope someone is able and
willing to offer some free advice.

We refer to Indian jewelry, Native American jewelry and American
Indian jewelry as jewelry that is handcrafted by several Indian
artisans whom we personally purchase from. For many years now we have
purchased a large selection of Indian jewelry from the same Native
American Indian artists and found their skills to be exceptional.
These Indian artists including Taina T., Eunice B., Mae S., Jeanette
S. and her sister Janice H. We purchase our jewelry from Northern
Arizona and New Mexico and many pieces of our Indian jewelry will be
shipped with a certificate of authenticity.

Our Jewelry includes Bear Jewelry, Turquoise Jewelry, Dream Catcher
pendants, Southwest Jewelry, Earrings, Sterling Silver Jewelry,
Storyteller Bracelets and other gifts. Most of our Indian jewelry is
made using Liquid Silver, Sterling Silver and semi-precious gemstones
and is produced by the Navajo (Dine`) Indians.

For over 20 years, we have had the opportunity to purchase Indian
jewelry and American Indian gifts from the southwestern states. Now we
offer many products from throughout the southwest, including carved
Bears of Alabaster or Jet, the ever-popular American Indian Dream
Catcher, as well as Kachina Dolls. Among these items you will also
find Sterling Silver with 12K Gold Filled Bracelets, Bear necklaces,
Bear pendants and matching Bear Earrings. Our goal over the past four
years has been to bring Native American jewelry and gifts to the
public, at a reasonable price. We do our best to mark any items as
non-Indian made when we find it is applicable.

We ship jewelry items in a Free Silver Gift box with Bow, great for
any gift giving occasions. We offer Free shipping on all orders over
$50. Most orders are shipped the next business day, we do ship the
same day when ever possible. And we offer a Free Gift with purchase.
We hope you enjoy shopping with Bearlanders, where you will find
affordable Indian jewelry and Native American gifts.

Or please check out my site by typing <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.Bearlanderstradingco.com" target="_blank">www.Bearlanderstradingco.com</a>

Thank you in advance for any help,
Regards,
Tarl Michael

Howdy Tarl,

Google didn't kick you in the head. Your web designer sabotaged you by not
having all of the skills they should have.

You've got some terrific products but I suspect you are having a bunch of
problems getting orders placed. I ordered an item I would enjoy and I can't
find where to Check Out and finish my purchase. Whoops! Finally found
"View Orders" and my shopping cart is now empty. Yahoo is sabotaging you as
well.

In a properly designed shopping cart: Cookies should be optional and it
should NEVER lose a pending order.

  >> <meta name="robots" content="index, follow">
Shouts, "Beginner!". "NOINDEX", "NOFOLLOW", and "NOARCHIVE" are the only
words the web crawlers know.

  >> <meta name="description" content="indian jewelry, native american
The description is supposed to describe your site and it's being used for
keywords. More than 255 characters will get truncated.

  >> <meta name="keywords" content="Indian Jewelry,native american jewelry
Most web crawlers will index the first ten words. Some will index up to 25
words. Others will have declared your web site as sand-bagging before they
finish this line.

It looks like the description and keywords on every page are the same
instead of matching the contents.

  >> <script language="JavaScript">
There is absolutely no need for any Java script on this web page.

  >> <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="592">
This gets into marketing appearance: width="592" should be width="100%" so
your page looks good at 800 and 1024.

Many of the images do not have ALT tags.

The links to Yahoo indicate you can't afford commercial hosting. If someone
got burned on a Yahoo site, you catch the same backlash. Read your
contract. In order for Yahoo to legally process your transactions, you
agreed they were the actual seller and you are only providing them the
products to sell. You are only one of their puppets.

Appreciate the chance to point out a few things so other web designers can
learn a bit.

Thanks, Chris <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bizynet.com" target="_blank">http://www.bizynet.com</a>
