Post subject: Opening PDF or Word Documents Fails
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Group,

We run our employee web site on a Windows2K server running IIS 5.0 using
SSL. For the most part, the site runs fine. However, there seems to be an
intermittant problem opening PDF and Word Docs on the site. Some of our
users are able to open any document on the site without problem. Others
receive the following error message:

"Internet Explorer was unable to open this internet site. The site is
either unavailable or can not be found."

We have users on both stand alone PC's and Terminal Services experiencing
this problem. I am able to open anything on the site without error using a
stand alone PC. Another coworker with a stand alone PC can not.

We have two different workers logged into the sames term server, one can
open the documents without error and the other can not.

The direct links to the files are embedded in a flash file, which I thought
might be the problem. However, if the user types the direct address into
the address bar, the same error occurs.

We also have links to PDF and Word docs on standard html pages which are
reached through the same flash file. All our employees can reach the
stnadard html pages and the subsequent PDF and Word files linked there.

I am very confused about this problem, especially when some of our term
server users can reach the documents without error and others can not on
the same term server.

Anyone ever see this before? More importantly, anyone know what could be
causing it?

TIA

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

A couple of things to check, which is on the client machines:

check to ensure the acrobat reader is functioning properly
See the versions of IE and see if it is an IE issue (versions of IE are also dependant on the OS, so IE 6 on win 98 is not the same as IE 6 on winme).

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.
