Hi

How would one go about setting up a web repository of pay-to-download
documents, preferably using some 3rd-party credit card company to
validate user's payment details, eg Pay Pal?

Any Web links/book references?

Many thanks in advance

There are dozens of ways you could do this. If you provide details on how,
exactly, you want the process to go - someone can give you a better answer.

OSCommerce can do this. Latest distributions have all required
functionality built in.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The process goes something like this:-

A casual visitor enters the site and reads brief descriptions
(abstracts) of document. The visitor decides he would like to read -
and is willing to pay a small fee for - a particular document. He hits
a button and is requested for his credit card details. He enters his
card no. expiry date & whatever else and is then given a link to
download the required document. The small fee (less approproate
commission) is then paid to my bank account.

As I am no security/finance expert I would prefer (for a fee) to hand
payment processing to a 3rd party. My role would be to provide the
content & set up the front end.

cheers

Take a look at authorize.net. If you don't like them, there are a number of
other services that do essentially the same thing. You'll need a merchant
account of your own, though. Any other option will be a *lot* more
expensive.

Could well be. I've never dealt with them. But I'll bet they're cheaper
than anything that doesn't involve having your own merchant account.

That is an important question. Even PayPal has real-time processing, if
you're willing to pay their rates.

Really can't say. Could be quite small or could be huge.

Initially I'd like to start with a payment service that takes a
percentage of revenues rather than charging a flat fee as I don't want
to pay out more than I receive.
