Hi All,
I am a complete novice and I realise that this is a real longshot but I was
wondering if someone might help or redirect me to somewhere that could.
I wish to build a web site but my only experience in the past has been with
Yahoo and their free range of tools to build a personal website. I want to
build on the website hosted by a provider other than Yahoo.
Does anybody know if I use the "Yahoo site builder" to build my pages is it
still possible to upload these to any web site, that is not hosted by Yahoo?
I figure it's just HTML code so it should be theoretically possible unless
Yahoo makes their Web site building tools somehow exclusive to their web
sites.
Thanks for any help or recommendations,

Dreamweaver is really good. I would just start learning something like
Dreamweaver. Not hard but not easy. Then you can do anything.
I doubt you can do what your wanting to do though. Don't know much about
yahoo builder as they tend to be over priced.

Do you understand FTP? If not, spend the 10 minutes required learning
the basics.
Okay, build your site locally. Test it on your local PC (don't waste
money on Dreamweaver or whatever).
Then using FTP transfer the site to your host.
Caveats:
1) Check for file name case sensitivity at the host (is it Windows or
Linux?)
2) Beware of specifying local file names in HTML pages like "<img
src=c:\my pictures\mypic.jpg>"
Instead, if this is a small and simple site, keep all files in one
directory, then you can use "<img src=mypic.jpg>" with impunity.

Basically, in my own experience, anything built using a geoCities
editor [other than their advanced editor which you have to manually
inssert the markup] is bloated [nested tables, sometimes for no reason
other than to nest the things, and such touches]. Secondly you will
need to download not only the page but all the 'bits and pieces' if
you used one of their "themes" [all the images]. Then you will need to
make sure you remove all their server markup/code - especially if it
was a free level site [after all, you don't really want to share
GeoCities ads on your site if hosted elewhere, right?].
If you are asking "can I create pages on their online editor and cut
and paste it to another file to upload elsewhere?" - Sure you could;
but why? There are some decent freebie/shareware HTML editors
available if you don't care to invest in one that is $100 or more in
price. Could possibly look throuhg Amazon's merchants offerings and
snag a copy of homesite [v4.5 or v5] or, if you wish, dreamweaver for
a 'more reasonable price' for your pocketbook.

Thanks Carol. I was specifically referring to "Yahoo site builder" which
they supply free to use with their hosted paid packages. You download it for
free as long as you have a yahoo ID and can work offline with it. When ready
it will upload your page to a hosted website (not Geocities). This uploading
process is all somehow configured to work with their sites.I gather you may
be able to use "FTP" to upload to a non Yahoo site but don't know how.I will
explore this avenue and if problematic will invest the time and money in
something like Dreamweaver.

Yes can do this with yahoo site builder.
I Also have MS Publisher as part of "Office" and that seems to create web
pages also.Im not sure that it would be a good alternative though.

This is where I get lost so will explore FTP and come back to it

Download it and try it out. You will catch on fast.

You would be better off to learn HTML. You probably can't mess things up
any worse than Publisher will.

Linux file names are case sensitive. Just use ALL lower case and you
will be fine.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Newbie upload files to website..Yahoo |

Please No!
Name the four worst web site creation programs.
4. Microsoft FrontPage
3. Microsoft Word
2. Microsoft Excel
...and the Number One Worst Editor is..
1. Microsoft Publisher
We have a winner!
If you need a graphical interface, try the free NVU editor, which is
the Mozilla Composer as a standalone. Good for amateurs, I suppose,
and perhaps a better way to get started.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://nvu.com/" target="_blank">http://nvu.com/</a>
If you want to code, get Crimson Editor.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://crimsoneditor.com/" target="_blank">http://crimsoneditor.com/</a>

Thanks for the vote and the laugh
I will check out your suggestions.
I notice you didn't list Dreamweaver in your vote...seems to be a
contentious item. Some say great and others say terrible.I bring it up
because I also have access to it.To be honest I still really like the yahoo
site building tools for their sheer "mum and dad" simplicity, click on text
box, type, and drag it anywhere on the page.Same for pictures.Add a
hyperlink?Again, just click a button.I don't need fancy scripts or anything
more complex than say what I could format in a word document (as it would
appear on the web).

I'll clarify my own opinion then, by saying that Dreamweaver is far
too expensive for consideration for one-off or occassional sites. It
is a professional developer tool for use by professional developers
who really know what they are doing, and do a lot of it. In the wrong
hands, just like a very powerful motorcycle, it can be a very
expensive route to disaster, in the right hands a thrilling ride.
