Post subject: Newbie security issue?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hi,

I just got a new ISP that gave me a fixed IP, so I thought I'd give a try to
IIS 5.1, running on XP pro. I put together some stuff and threw it into the
default web server. Now I can see the pages if I enter the private address
of my computer into IE, but with the public IP it doesn't work ("The page
cannot be displayed").

Other useful info:
I'm pretty sure I have the port forwarding set up correctly on my netgear
router, because it works with other stuff, also a port testing site tells me
that 80 is open (and I know it isn't blocked by the ISP).

I also have another computer on the network with the same results. If I put
in the private address of the IIS machine, it works, otherwise no. What's
interesting, is that on that machine, I have firefox which tells me that the
"connection was refused".

Just to be sure, I turned off the microsoft firewall, but that didn't help.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Samud

some cheap routers do not route the public ip address back to the server if
it is used from the lan side of the router. my old 3com was like that, but
my new nortel does properly route the external ip back to the proper machine
when used from inside. try going to an external proxy like
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.anonymizer.com" target="_blank">www.anonymizer.com</a> and then surf back to your public ip from there, that is
a good test to see if you are accessible from outside.

You were right. It is accessible from outside my private network. Thank a
lot. I only wish I knew earlier...

Hello,

Since your other machine on the LAN got a message like "connection was
refused", it sounds like your router does not want to forward the external
IP, when used from inside the network.

If you will be using a domain name, you can simply use the hosts file on
each machine (if you do not have an internal DNS server), to point it to the
internal IP. This would be a work-around for your problem.
