I haven't used them in years. One of my clients was having problems with
their domain, stopped by Network Solutions...

Was I surprised to see them offering domain registration for 100 years,
bargain price $995....

Now that's optimism!

There was an interesting discussion on Slashdot about this a month ago:

In an issue of a quarterly magazine called Weird New Jersey a reader
submitted a photograph of a man's headstone - which listed his name,
date of birth and death, then his website URL. I wonder if he was one
of the folks signing up for the 100 year domain registration plan?

No domain can be registered for more than 10 years. What
they are actually offering is automatic renewal of the
domain name every ten years.

Makes a lot of sense to large corporates who are likely to
still be in business even though the current shareholders
may no longer be involved. Not much of a deal if the price
stays the same but if it increases somewhat -<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Well, 100 years is a long time. NS will make out like bandit if something
changes in the next 20 years and domain names becomes obsolete or ip numbers
cease to exist....remember, just just two decades ago, disco was in, VHS or
Beta, Beta lost, VHS has been replaced by CD's, cable was for farmers and
wireless calling meant yelling for you neighbor over the fence.

Isn't that taking spam to a new level?
Next thing you'll see on grave markers is animated banners.

Well certainly would be taking spam to a whole new level if the person
was limited "being exposed" to the spam by needing to be within the
vicinity of the headstone to read it.

A limited reach in audience. But, as the person who took the photo
then submitted it to the magazine proved, was a method of site
promotion that did "catch one's eye".

 >Next thing you'll see on grave markers is animated banners.
 >Hmmm. Money making oppurtunity here?

Somehow I don't think it will catch on as a "spamming technique" due
to the cost of headstones then the pricing of the "wording". An
animated banner or scrolling text would only be more money involvement
and one aspect that lures people to spam is a low-cost factor.

On the other hand though - I did like the parking meter thought one
guy's family, in Indiana, used for his burial plot. I already told my
kids that they could duplicate that one for me when my time comes Smile
