I want to put some music on a website which is a commercial one but the
clients are not going to pay for the music. Where can I get some free
music?

DON'T!!

I assume that if this is a commercial website, that your client wants
visitors to the site. There is nothing that will drive visitors away
faster than music playing on the site.

.... Unless you have a very good reason to make music a part of the user
experience at the site.

I almost put that in my original reply, but I didn't want to give the OP
an excuse to put music on a site where it doesn't belong.

But if the site was a commercial site for a band, the OP wouldn't be
looking for free music. The band would supply music for him to use.

And even then, instead of forcing it, give them a button to activate it.
Unless you think your viewers are too stupid to click a button marked
"LISTEN TO MUSIC". Perhaps people seeking band sites *are* that stupid
and that's why SG is totally dependent on Flash.

Yeah, just ruffled me the "dont use music". Now you added the caveat,
I'm happy Smile There are plenty of sites with good use of music (that
aren't band sites).

Very Happy

It is in a section that will have slide show, it is going to be pretty
boring for the reader that is why some catchy music would be good there.

Hint: it's going to be pretty boring for the "reader" even with music.
Slideshows really just waste a visitor's time. Just put up the damn
pictures and let *me* decide what I want to look at, and allow me to do
it without interrupting the music I'm *already* listening to on my
computer.

You may find that when it comes to music, free and catchy are mutually
exclusive.

I'm wondering if the real problem is not how to make the music play to
distract from the admitted boring slide show, but rather how to make the
slide show not boring.

Almost always, yes. But like an creative medium, there are no black and
white rules.

It'd rarely get clicked. These days the Internet competes with TV, so it
has to be as easy as TV. If you ask anyone to do anything that requires
effort, they won't do it (casual surfers).

> Perhaps people seeking band sites *are* that stupid

Band sites are particularly weird beasts though, I have to admit. They
aren't indicative of the majority of web sites, but it does goes to show
that there are no real rules. It very much depends on who is likely to
be visiting your site, and what is most suitable for them.

There is a very nice web site for a Japanese hotel (can't find it now),
but it has very beautiful almost ambient music in the background. It's
very low, soft, and mixed in with background sounds recorded at the
reokan itself. It's brilliantly executed. I'll dig out a link after the
Christmas break. I would never have expected to find music on a hotel
booking site.

Then of course there are a million MySpace pages that should burn in
hell with their embedded music at full blast Smile hatehatehatehate.

Audio is just one of the tools we have to had as designers, but just
like everything else in our repertoire it can be (and often is) abused.
If we banned every technology that was abused on the WWW, there would be
no WWW.

I would never click it. Very true. Not because it requires effort
though. I do click video thumbnails to watch video, and I do click mp3
links on band sites. The reason I wouldn't click such general 'listen
to music' buttons, is that I don't want to hear it. I practically
always have music on, and *anything* that gives me unexpected music is
dealt with by clicking a cross in the top right corner.

Means I might not notice it through my own music, but I'm guessing I
would, and give the site one quick look to see if I could find the
'off' button. If not, it's clicking a tiny cross, which conveniently
resides in the same place, regardless which site I'm on Wink

Besides, 'very low, soft', is relative. The way I tend to crank up the
volume, I'd definitely hear it loud Smile

Audio sure has its place, but it should be optional.
Yesterday I was on my bank's site, which gave a link to a website
where you can sell old toys and the bank gives Euro 2.50 to War Child
for each transaction made on that site. I thought that a good idea, so
I clicked the link. Even before the page was open there was a load of
noise coming through my music, and it was all appropriate. Sounds of
opening a window, 2 presenters talking about the site, aimed at
children and their parents. Very nice. But I clicked the red cross,
thinking 'maybe I'll check again when I'm not playing music'.

I think designers should respect the fact that many people do not want
a website to take control of the sound around them. People who want to
hear it, will click the links. Leave the rest of us in peace Smile

I disagree. The song is much of the appeal. Anyway they want a song, I
don't want any trouble with copyrite does anyone know a site with some
songs I could use.

The hard fact is a slide show is often a diversion to hide the fact that the
subject itself is catatonic. The adage might be more accurate as 'a picture
is worth a thousand (boring) words'
