Post subject: Monitoring load balanced webs
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

We've got two load balanced IIS 5.0 servers, each hosting a static web
site. In the IIS properties for these sites, each is bound to the
cluster's (shared/primary) IP address. NLB is set for Unicast mode,
and each server only has one nic.

Is it possible to use HTTPMon to monitor these sites? As I understand
it, if I attempt to monitor each of these sites over the primary
cluster IP, my attempts will be load balanced and I will not know
which server I am connecting to. If I attempt to monitor using the
dedicated IP address (on the cluster adapter), I do not think I would
be able to connect to the sites I want to monitor because they're
bound in IIS to the primary cluster IP. The best I can figure is that
I could possibly monitor a second web site on each server that I could
create and bind to the dedicated IP.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

If you need a simple way to monitor and alert on any
website problem on any server anywhere on the net
you might want to download our ReJuvin8 tool. It's
free for the first 15-days.

It can alert you by email and phone if any site or page
fails. And with its Operations Report screen you see
everything it's monitoring graphically color-coded with
details on mouse-over.

Besides URL scanning, it has a local operations mode
where, if it detects a problem, it can restart any processes,
or services, or even reboot the server. Keeps your sites
running despite problems. Gives you time to find and fix
bugs while avoiding angry user mobs.

We think it's easy to set up ReJuvin8, but we are available
on contract if you want help with it.

Charles

What exactly are you wanting to monitor? Bind some more IPs to the NICs, if you haven't already, and use perfmon from another machine and monitor them
remotey for what you want, or you can use LogParser to analyze the logs for each server. A number of people use WebTrends to do this. As far as
HTTPmon, I don't have an answer for you.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.

You could create an extra site on each server (bound to=20
dedicated ip) in the cluster and monitor that. I guess=20
that would tell you if IIS has crashed. But to make sure=20
that the site on an individual cluster is responding=20
correctly I do not think that's possible.

If you figure this out, please post. I am interested. I=20
will do the same but I'm running out of ideas.

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

I knew I couldn't be the only one confused by this! I agree that the
259651 doc is inadequate, but all attempts at finding HTTPMon info
seem to lead directly to that dead-end. I was pulled away from this
project recently, but will be returning to it next week. My next
plan: since we only host one web site on these load balanced servers,
I'm going to switch the IP address in IIS properties to <all
unassigned>. That way it will respond to both the cluster IP and the
dedicated IP. If it works, I'll be able to monitor the site I'm
actually concerned about rather than creating a second web site,
binding it to the dedicated IP, and monitoring it to tell me if IIS
goes down. There are docs that say not to use <all unassigned> on a
load balanced web, but they do not explain why. Fortunately I've got
a test lab for this now, so if that doesn't work I can start adding
nics or doing whatever else may be necessary to figure it out.

Please respond if you learn anything new.

Thanks,
Chris
