I'm curious if anyone would know how much traffic a domain name can generate
if the name is a misspelled domain name of one of the more popular websites.

For instance, if someone registered tahoo.com, how many people would
misspell yahoo.com and end up at tahoo.com?

The short answer would be: Not very likely.

The long answer:
Most people looks down at the keyboard to make sure they at least hit the
first letter right. If you go from there, Yahoo Inc. has already covered the
interesting ones. Besides, why would you research on something like this?

I've only had 1 close encounter due to misspelling of a domain name. My
business domain name is kaa.no, and one day I noticed an e-mail dropping
into the catch-all e-mail account (due to an unknown e-mail address) with an
attached application to an open position. This, of course, made me wonder,
as I'm self-employed and wasn't looking even close to looking for additional
resources at the time. As it turns out, some poor guy misspelled the domain
name in the "To" address, which was meant for the Norwegian Civil Aviation
Authority (CAA).

One thing's for certain, no real money can be made on registering a
misspelling of a domain name, unless you intend to hijack the user's
computer (which is a bad thing). A user who types the URL expects to end up
at a specific service, not the one you provide. And a user with a clue will
quickly realize his/her mistake and type the correct URL instead of checking
out what you have to offer.

I know there are a lot of clueless users out there, but they're mostly
caught up in reading all the way through the "urgent business proposals" and
"prescription-free drugs" ads they get by e-mail.

The key is to know what search word to use in Google to get more
information.

Try: "typosquatting"

You will get plenty of webpages with more information on what you are
asking.

Try <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.microsift.com/" target="_blank">http://www.microsift.com/</a> IIRC it used to be a site full of moans
about Billy-Boy, but it's different now.

The danger, or course, is that someone could mirror a genuine
e-commerce site, take the orders and money, and run. The moral, I
guess is to name such sites carefully.

Amazon.com is an official trademark, which means you can't register the
domain name Amazoon.com, Amazom.com, or Amozon.com to capitalize on the
confusion.

Enough visitors are generated to make such names big buisness - yes, many
people who end up at the wrong site will leave for the one they really want
but enough stay long enough, - curiosity?-to check out the misspelled site.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Someone once told me that when I'm registering a website domain name that I
should consider registering common misspellings of that name if it seems it
might be an issue of users mistyping the name... I haven't had to do
this, but it might be right for some people...
