I hope this is the proper terminology for what I'm trying to do.

I would like to have my pages hosted on several web servers. If the first
one is unavailable due to traffic or being down or whatever, I want the user
to be redirected to the secondary and then the tertiary, etc.

I'm thinking this is a DNS issue but not sure.

Also, how many servers would be sufficient?

TIA,
Bill

Seriously, one SHOULD be enough for three nine up time 99.9% but two should
give you nearly 100% as long as
1. there in seperate datacenters
2. there on completely seperate networks...
3. there not both relying on the same nameservers, database, etc... any key
area of infrastructure...

What is the site, why is it so critical, are there any other factors...

How to do it? Nameservers is a start, use four name servers instead of two,<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It has to do with critical weather data being provided to subscribers.

So am I understanding this correctly? If I type url.com into my browser and
the browser can't find a site at dns1.com or dns2.com, it will look at
dns3.com and dns4.com

Thanks,

Thats the basics -
also useful to shorten the ttl of each name server
to speed up response time<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
