Vista Media Centre Errors

I am logged in as Administrator Administrator is a member of the local
Administrators group.

When loading Windows Media Centre I get this error message:

Windows Media Centre
x You are currently logged on as a Guest. Windows Media Centre requires a
non-Guest account. If you need to change your user account type, contact the
owner of this system.

I have windows firewall disabled
The internet is working fine
I have UAC disabled ( I also tried enabled, made no difference)
I have windows defender disabled

Network Discovery = ON
File Sharing = ON
Public folder sharing = OFF
Printer sharing = OFF (no printers installed)
Password protected sharing = OFF
Media sharing = OFF

And if I try to select Network and Sharing Center/Media Sharing/Change... I
get this error message

Windows Media Player
! You are logged on with a user account that does not have sufficient
permissions to turn on media sharing.

I tried right clicking Media Centre Edition and selecting RunAs
administrator, I get the same "Windows Media Centre requires a non-Guest
account" error message.

Hi Hamish,

Please note the IIS newsgroup doesn't cover issues regarding to Windows
Media Center. To get assistance with MCE issues, you may look for the
following support options:

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Support Options
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/support/mce.mspx

You can also use one of your MSDN Technical Support Incidents to work with
us via telephone based support. This will be the most effective way to
assist you on complicated and project based issue. Also you won't even need
to spend the incident account if the problem is finally confirmed to be a
product issue or can be simply fixed by applying hotfix. Please refer to
the support note below.

About the information of free incident support for MSDN subscribers, please
look at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/support/default.aspx.

To obtain the phone numbers for Microsoft Customer Service and Support
services technology request, please take a look at the web site listed
below.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS

Thanks.

Sincerely,

WenJun Zhang

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by contacting
Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) at:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/support/default.aspx.

Thank you WenJun Zhang, you are the first from MS to reply to any of my
newsgroup postings.

Yes I will try with one of my technical support incidents with the support
desk.

Well that turned into a huge disaster... It went from bad to worse.

I called MS tech support, was on the phone for 4-5 hours with them, and they
could not resolve the issue. It got escalated a number of times, I seemed
to know more than the tech guys.. most didn't even know that a LOCALSYSTEM
account existed and that it has higher priveledges than Local Administrator,
and they didn't even know what ACL file security was.

When attempting to do an inplace upgrade.. it came up with an error message
everytime.

When attempting to do a new install it moved the windows to windows.old and
proceeded to do a fresh isntall.. that just lead to an unbootable system..

Now I have moved my hdds to another pc, and copying 500Gb off my hdds, so
that i can do a HARD FORMAT, and a fresh install.

All because of a silly Vista network centre wizard changed a setting
somewhere, that lead to Windows Media Centre not being able to load.

I installed Systernals FileMon and Process Monitor, and WinDBG, I could log
the API calls, but I didn't have enough knowledge to debug it. If only all
MS techs could debug my logs for me using EasyAssist. It doesn't seem that
technical this day of age.
