Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I have had some requests from people to link to our webpage. Some
merely want to link to our home page others would like to link directly
to product pages so that customers could order directly on their site
and then charge their prices. I am not opposed to this usually because
it generates revenue for us. No one with offensive or hurtful websites
has approached me so we have not rejected them.

The question I have is if anyone has a written agreement they require
sites to use who want to reference your site and information on your
site. I would be interested in seeing it.

I also am interested in the legality of people who link to my website
without my permission or knowledge.

I don't think it is possible to require everyone who links to you to
have your permission to do so. It would be silly to take legal action
against people who link to you, since inbound links will only improve
your ranking in Google, and I recall from an earlier thread that you are
trying to improve your ranking. As long as people are not hot-linking
your content, why do you care who links to you?

I can imagine a couple of situations that I would object to. One would
be if the site linking to me was offensive or for some reason might
affect my standing with Google, Yahoo or others (probably would require
many sites). I can imagine some people trying to sabotage their
competition by putting them in link farms or spamming in their name to
draw the wrath of the search engine gods.

Another does not really pertain to me but the guy who has the Google
Image rip-off site is stealing people's images to display on his own
site and also causing a drain on their bandwidth.

I have been made aware of one site in my industry that requires people
to fill out a form --www.bicgraphics.com.

That is correct. I am mostly curious about this question.

Thanks, for the feedback.

I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent this.

I can't imagine why anyone would take up their valuable time to do such
a thing, but I suppose it it possible.

This is called hot-linking. It is a no-no. This is a situation where
legal action might be justified.

I doubt it is enforceable. I couldn't find the form.

Most people here if not all can't answer that question because they are no
lawyers. There have been many court cases regarding deep linking. You
might want to read up on those, but for legal advice you need a lawyer.

Google are wise to this sort of thing. They know that webmasters have no
control over incoming links, so incoming links are never used to penalise
a site's ranking. That is:

* "genuine" incoming links: raise a site's profile;
* link farms: don't raise a site's profile, but don't lower it.

A link is analagous to a road sign, or a route map. All the referring site
is doing is providing a set of directions to its visitors on how to find a
particular piece of content on your site. And as sets of directions go, a
direct link is more user-friendly than "go to their home page, click
'articles' and then click '2005' and then click 'June' and then click the
article 'how to link to other sites'".
