Post subject: Lessons learned today.....
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I learned a valuable lesson today as far as print advertising is
concerned.....

We enquired about advertising, and were told that the magazine in question
only had a single quarter-page space left available, and a single 94x30mm
(half banner) space left available.....
Then we were told that the copy deadline was 12:00 on Monday.....
We were told if we booked the quarter page, they'd throw in the 94x30 space
for a fraction of the original cost, but we hadn't decided what we were
doing by that stage.....
Half an hour after reserving the 94x30mm space, we got a second email
offering us the quarter page at a greatly reduced rate (well under half
price).....

We didn't take the extra slot, and I thought no more about it until now.....

I've just realised that the best time to book your advertising is just
before the copy deadline.....It seems to me that they were left with a
couple of spaces in the mag that they were struggling to fill at the last
moment, and were prepared to sell them on at a reduced rate as it's better
than not selling the space at all.....

I know this method may not always work.....It may sometimes backfire, and
you could be left with o advertising spaces at all, but the reductions were
so big that it seems like a worthwhile gamble......

Hmmm... I had 4 different people from the yellow pages call me yesterday
about placing an ad, saying the issue cutoff date was today. I should
probably ask them if there are any discounts... they probably have a few odd
spots here and there to fill as they try to layout the pages

But I did learn yesterday that when a big chain goofs it can be to your
advantage... I went to Staples to get 17,000 pages printed the other day and
went to pick it up yesterday. I specifically asked for neon yellow paper
and they did orange instead (not even neon).
I did a mock gasp in horror when I opened the boxes up and they wound up
giving it all to me for free. Its not alot... about $300 in printing and
each page was cut 3 times to make 6 flyers - so another $200 worth of
cutting, but still was nice to wheel it out of there without paying anything<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I wouldn't worry about it. EVERY time I talk to these people, they ALWAYS
have that little bit extra space available just before the deadline!

It's just a line, these people would sell their Grannies!

if you've got a good range of adverts available it's worth learning the
deadlines and checking shortly before on a fairly regular basis...you can
get some great deals if you can get camera ready copy to them in no time
at all...especially if the deadline is Friday and they are hoping to knock
off early

but did they then reprint on the correct paper ?
That's usually the way these things operate.
