Post subject: Invalid host name error
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I have II6 running on Server 2003. I have a registered domain,
www.bwrentz.com, that I had been hosting in the default site location but
now I need to move it to another directory, on a different drive with more
space, so I can set up another site. I stopped the default site, did the
right click on 'Web Sites', added a new site, picked the IP address of my
server, port 80, browsed to the new directory where the files are now
located and saved all that, but I get 'Bad Request (Invalid Hostname) now
when I go to the site in my browser. This should be an immediate change,
shouldn't it? I have my webhost already looking at my IP address, that is
how the default site was visible after about 12 hours. But moving the site
to a different folder and using the host header info and the new directory
location the site should still be visible without waiting for DNS
propagation. What else do I need to do? TIA Larry

When you created the new website, are you sure you added the appropriate
host-header entry in after you created it?

Right-click on the website in IIS Manager -> Properties -> Web Site tab ->
Advanced button
Ensure that at least one of the identities for your website is:

<IP address> + <port 80> + host-header

(or has the host-header entry blank).

Cheers

Ken,
I have uploaded an RTF file with screenshots of those pages at
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.webster-info.org/screenshot.htm." target="_blank">http://www.webster-info.org/screenshot.htm.</a> Is that not the correct set up?
I could connect to it find when it was in the default web folder so I know
that port 80 is not being blocked. Any help will be appreciated.

Larry

Hi,

When I attempt to go to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bwrentz.com" target="_blank">www.bwrentz.com</a> I get an error from ISA Server. I
think you may need to look at your ISA Server configuration - I think that
is what is preventing you from getting access to your sites, rather than IIS
per se.

Cheers
Ken

Sorry - that looks like our ISA Server Smile

OK, trying from another machine outside the ISA Server. I get the same Bad
Hostname error that you are getting. However, I see that <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bwrentz.com" target="_blank">www.bwrentz.com</a>
resolves to 64.74.96.249 which isn't listed in the dialogues in your RTF
file, so I assume you are doing some kind of reverse-proxying, or you are
hiding the webserver behind a NAT device. Are you sure that this is
configured correctly?

Also, have you restarted the http.sys service after making the changes that
you did? (I don't think you should need to do this, but just in case you
need to refresh the http.sys routing table)

Cheers
Ken

I am running the Windows 2003 from home behind a router, not using any kind
of reverse proxy. Just to bring the site back online I copied the files back
to the default site location and restarted that site. Now the site is
visible again. I will try again later this week. Thanks for your help. Larry
