Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has any good advice for a small company that
is about to venture onto the internet? Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Pierre.

Makes sense to ask/include that information. Since some company's
only need a web based business card for advertisement, while others
need a full ecommerce suite.

Good question,

Howdy Pierre,

It's called the Wild Wild West (www) and there are no sheriffs to protect
you. Hire the best Wagon Master you can find (AFTER you have carefully
checked their references) who can answer your questions clearly and
completely in advance. There are thousands of snake oil salesmen pretending
to be Webmasters and thousands more pretending to be web designers or SEO
experts.

Fortunetly, there are many qualified commercial designers in every city and
they will have a nice looking porfolio site showing some of their work. If
they can't code a complete web page in NotePad, they are not ready to call
themselves a Web Designer much less a Webmaster.

A Webmaster can sit at a server keyboard and handle any problems that come
up including script errors in any language. I'm a Webmaster.

You should expect to pay $600 to $1,000 for a web site design that includes
a certified shopping cart. It should look good at 640 wide and expand
gracefully to fill 800 and 1024 wide screens. High quality web hosting will
run $15 to $25 a month. Less that that means little or no technical
support.

Thanks, Chris <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bizynet.com" target="_blank">www.bizynet.com</a> and <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bizycart.com" target="_blank">www.bizycart.com</a>

I would tend to disagree with Chris about resolution, 640 is dead and
burried. Focus on 800 and 1024.

Now what I would recommend is to look for a company that has a good
portfolio. Make sure that the sites are no only pleasing to the eye,
but also follow basic SEO rules.

If you require dynamic elements such as a shopping cart ask what
scripts they plan on using. Most popular scripts will have information
on the web, if you can't find information about it be wary. Scripts
can be a security risk, most popular scripts are fairly safe and kept
up to date to close security holes.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Howdy,

I'll fully agree that very few people have their computer screens set for
640 wide. HOWEVER, on computers set for 800 wide:

What's the result when you turn on favorite links or other options that use
the left or right side of the screen? About 640 wide.

When web pages come up in a minimized window, are they cropped or usable?

Did you know that WebTV is still around?

Granted, some web site designs and requirements make 640 wide impactical but
it's still a basic requirement for a properly skilled web designer to be
able to design sites that flex from 640 to 1280. Fixed width pages that
look orphaned in the middle of a 1280 screen don't hack it. Sites hard
coded for 1024 are even worse.

Thanks, Chris <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bizynet.com" target="_blank">www.bizynet.com</a> and <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bizycart.com" target="_blank">www.bizycart.com</a>

I think the best advice I could offer is to just go buy a book. It
will help you more than any advise on a forum. My personal opinion is
find your niche and dominate it. Try Google Adwords and also getting
listed in directories online. Beware of the "instant" 1000000 visitors
claims too. You can visit my website to contact me directly if you
want help.
