It would probably speed up the connection slightly, though the
difference would probably not be noticeable to users.
The other factor to consider when looking at the location of the server
is Google (not sure about other SE). For example, when using
google.com.au, if I search for "only pages in Australia", it will
display results based purely on the location of the server. While a
domain may be .com.au, if it is hosted overseas, it won't show in those
results. Conversely, it will include a .co.uk site if it happens to be
hosted in Australia. For a business based in the US it doesn't really
make a difference, but for other countries, it is definitely something
that needs to be taken into consideration.
