Post subject: ISS will not start
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

We recently purchased two new computers from Dell with XP-Pro and after
installing VS 2003, ISS breaks on both of them and will not start.
Uninstalling and reinstalling IIS gets it running again but when ASP.NET is
installed, it breaks and again will not start. When I try to start the ISS
service it simply says the service will not start, gives an error code of
2147418113, and says to check the event log, but there are no messages in the
event log.

Any ideas what is causing this and how to fix this?

IIS is not installed by default on XP Pro, and neither VS2003 nor ASP.Net
will install IIS even though they require it for some functionality (for
security reasons) -- so you must first intentionally install IIS in
accordance to their instruction, then install VS2003/ASP.Net for proper
configuration.

I would be very surprised if Dell ships XP Pro with IIS explicitly installed
by default -- so I suspect that when you first saw IIS broken after install
VS2003, that is by-design -- IIS isn't even installed. As for installing
ASP.Net, you need to explicitly run "aspnet_Regiis.exe -i" if you install
ASP.Net BEFORE installing IIS.

Are you running security software like Norton/Symantec/McAfee/etc on the
machine.

They are known to intentionally break IIS functionality for security reasons
(since they reason that consumers should not be running web servers). You
will need to disable such products and re-install IIS to make sure they do
not interfere. If they are indeed causing your issues, you will have to
obtain support from those vendors.

Try this:
Under Component Services in your admin tools folder click component
services/computers/my computer/com+ applications/IIS Out-Of-Process. Right
click properties/ tab “Identity” make sure system account is checked.

Then go into your services right click/properties on World Wide Web
Publishing Service and IIS Admin Service. Logon tab and make sure that the
Local System account is checked here too.
