After setting up host headers in IIS6 what additional settings need to be
made in a DNS and a client browser to use the host headers?

You have to setup all your A records in DNS. There is
nothing to be done in the client's browser.

Is there a tool that check what request is being made from the client? As
going to ahostheader.mydomain.com is going to the default web site instead
of the web site with the host header.

Are you saying that if the client types ahostheader.mydomain.com, he/she
gets to the default website anyway? If so, host headers are not correct
configured on the server.

That is what is happening. To test it I created a basic HTML file in each of
the three areas and made it the default page.
