Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello and thanks in advance.

I have spent the better part of a day troubleshooting a strange error,
it seems that I can no longer right-click folders or websites in the
mmc 2.0, doing so crashes the console. I've reinstalled the OS
(Standard 2003 Server), IE 6 , and IIS... at my wits end.

Thank you
Stephen

For example, this has been observed in the past on an upgraded machine in
conjunction with Site Server (old product).

Basically, what was happening was that the product has an integration DLL
which is linked with the Right-click Properties page... which means that
everytime you right-click properties page the DLL would crash (this is how
it would appear to a user).

Crashes like this is straight-forward to diagnose -- in your case, attach a
debugger like NTSD.EXE onto mmc.exe, and then right-click folders to cause
the crash. This will cause it to be caught inside the debugger, at which
point you will find out what DLL is crashing. If it looks like a snapin you
do not care about, you can now go and remove it, and this hopefully will
stop the crashes from happening in the snapin in the future.

Hello,

Did you reinstall, as in a fresh install? I'm quite sure that this will not
happen on a fresh install, with nothing else installed. So this makes me
wonder if you have any third-party applications that could cause something
like this, especially if it happens to other MMC snap-ins, and not only IIS.

Does this occur in all MMCs? Or just the IIS one?

Cheers

Sure, please test other consoles to check if other snap-ins also hit
the same error and check event log to see if it has been filled with
lots of error events.

2nd, make sure the server has been applied with MS03-026 and
MS-03-039 to prevent it's caused by RPC issue. Also, open the
server(computer icon)'s property dialog. If 'Direct Metabase Edit' is
selected, disable it to test.

3rd, if Win2K3 pops up to ask you send the app failure report of the
crash, please copy and paste the detailed data(or a screenshot) in
your thread.

Looking forward to your update.

use it, although I have a good idea what the dlls are, they look to be
Front Page and the new .Nety Framwork

What is returned when you give the 'k' command?

Hi Stephen,

Please follow the steps below to list the AV(c0000005 access
violation) thread's call stack:
(cbc.ddc): Access violation - code c0000005 (first chance)

0:000>~ // list all threads, then please find
the AV thread (cbc.ddc)'s [number]
0:000>~[number] s // go into the thread
0:[number]>kv // list its call stack

Then please paste the output here for us to take a look. Thanks.

Best regards,

WenJun Zhang
