Post subject: IIS drops all active sessions
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

We have a ASP.NET solution running on IIS 6 (Windows 2003). We're using
Performance Monitor to check IIS and a couple of times we've experienced
that IIS drops all sessions, then create new sessions. As all the sessions
are dropped, the users looses everything stored in the users session. It
does not leave a message in the event log.
Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on?

Best regards,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

If you are using in-process session, please make sure IIS6's Web
Garden feature hasn't been enabled. In Application Pool's
Properties->Performance tab, the default worker process number is 1
which means Web Carden is disabled.

If this above isn't the cause, please check if there is any
corresponding work process termination event in event log.

Hi,
we haven't enabled Web Gardening. We do get another error in the event log
at the same time, from the .NET framework:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( .NET Runtime ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be
able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event: .NET
Runtime version 1.1.4322.573- Setup Error: Failed to load resources from
resource file
Please check your Setup.

So the IIS drops the session because of this? What could possibly be the
cause of the other error?
The solution is an ASP.NET running on IIS6. We're using Novell GroupWise to
access a document store and send/recieve mail.

Best regards,
Thomas

"So the IIS drops the session because of this? What could possibly be
the cause of the other error?"
Probably. If the ASP.net app refers any data access components, the
first suggestion is to upgrade MDAC(see my reply in your another
thread). Follow the article below to check your current MDAC version:

301202 HOW TO: Check for MDAC Version
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=301202

If it's MDAC 2.7, apply MDAC 2.7 SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ad000f2-cae7
-493d-b0f3-ae36c570ade8&languageid=f49e8428-7071-4979-8a67-3cffcb0c252
4&displaylang=en

Otherwise, upgrade to MDAC2.8:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6c050fe3-c795
-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en

If this above doesn't help, you may need to troubleshoot/debug the
ASP.net application. Attach VS.net to the ASP.net app's worker
process(w3wp.exe) to see if any detailed exceptions can be captured.
Here are the detailed steps:

1> In command line, go to WINDOWS\system32> and run: cscript
iisapp.vbs . This will show you the current 'XYZApplicationPool'
AppPool's worker process instance with its PID.

2> Launch VS.net and open the ASP.net web application.

3> In Debug menu, click Processes, click 'Show system processes' and
'Show processes in all sessions'. Then you should find the w3wp.exe
by its PID. Select it and Attach. Only select Common Language
Runtime. Close the dialog.

4> Monitoring if any exceptions are thrown when the Event ID ( 0 )
error occurs again.

Thomas,

If your server is crashing or hanging you might want to
download our ReJuvin8 tool. It's free for the first
15-days. It can keep your site running despite problems.

It's designed to detect problems then restart or reboot.
It can restart ANY programs, services, or processes in
precise order. It doesn't fix bugs but it does give you some
breathing room while you are finding them. ReJuvin8 also
gives you email and telephone alert messages and graphic
status reports. It runs as a Windows Service.

It can also test, alert, and report on URLs running anywhere
on any server on your net connection. So if you use multiple
servers you can use them to watch each other, too.

ReJuvin8 has both an automatic and a custom mode. In the
auto mode you make all the settings by pointing and
clicking. This will handle most applications.

The custom mode uses heartbeat synch files to get absolute
detection that key processes are working. Tools and
instructions are provided to help you do this. We also offer
customization as a contract service.

Charles

Hi Thomas,

Have you gotten any progress on this issue or if it has been
resolved? If it still persists, please don't hesitate to let me know.
