I have been using IIS to test my web sites for a couple of months now - no
problem.

Now I cannot access the local copy of my sites. A message says that
http://PWS1/ is not available. What happened and how do I fix it?

I have recently applied the XP2 patch - is this my problem?

XPSP2 will install and enable the Windows Firewall by default with few open
ports.

The port used by IIS (port 80) is closed by default. You will have to
manually open it by going to the Firewall and adding a port exception.

Yep. Either you need to open port 80 on the firewall (activated by
default by SP2) or disable the XP firewall if you use a different one.

It could well be due to the XP SP2 firewall, or it could be the service just
isn't running. Check in the services applet under Adminstrative tools to see
if it's running, and check if your firewall has an exception for port 80

also, see here :

Hello,

Windows XP SP2 enables the firewall, and this can be your problem.

This KB Article explains how to open ports (you want to open port 80):

"Some programs seem to stop working after you install Windows XP Service
Pack 2"
