Post subject: IIS 5.1 and Office 2003
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Ever since I installed Office 2003 last evening, I have
not been able to use IE to go to any http://localhost/...
addresses.

I am running Windows XP (Pro, of course). What I get
when I try these addresses now is either a hang (status
bar perpetually "trying"), or a partial HTML display (as
in, perhaps the last 300 bytes of the index.htm, for
example).

I've already tried rebooting, stopping and restarting
IIS, adding and removing virtual IIS folders. IE will
display these pages just fine, including references to
stylesheets and so on, if I attempt to open from Windows
Explorer (this action, as far as I understand, doesn't
involve IIS, as it's a "local" open, just as if it were a
Word document or such).

Any ideas?

Do you use Zone Alarm 5?

Cheers

I do use whatever the latest version of ZoneAlarm (basic)
is. I have used it for a long time, though. Could it be
a recent ZA upgrade that did this?

Apparently there is a bug in Zone Alarm 5. Users are seeing no output from
IIS, or only partial output. Typically the user has to wait a long period of
time before they see anything (either an error message from IE saying that
the content couldn't be retrieved, or the partial output). Because the
update has only come out recently, we are seeing a few cases of this now.

Cheers
Ken

Yes, indeed. I went to the Zone Alarm (ZoneLabs) site
forums, and found instructions for downloading the older,
4.5, version, uninstalling 5.0, and re-installing 4.5.
Doing this fixed all the problems with localhost.
Apparently 5.0 has caused a number of other problems, as
the forums were filled with advice to downgrade for
various reasons. (I had also noticed that Symantec anti-
virus had stopped scanning my outgoing mail some time
ago, and that was also, according to the ZA site, caused
by 5.0).

Thank you very much for your advice.
