I noticed something weird within our IIS logs. W ewent to the logs to track
an issue we were having and the time satmps were all wrong on the logs. For
example activity that was ocurring at 9:30 was appearing as 13:30. I checked
the time on the server at it displays correctly and is set to eastern
standard time. Why is this happening?

It logs in GMT (by default), that is most likely the reason.

You may want to read this article for different "solutions" to this:

"Incorrect date and time stamp for IIS log file entries"

Log files are in GMT unless you set them otherwise. (I think there is a
check box for that.) You must be in the midwest (GMT -6).

Setting them otherwise may screw up any log analysis software you use
though, so use caution.

Hi,

The problem is you saw the time in the log files has several hours error
according to your local time, right?

This should be caused by W3C Extended log always uses GMT time. This is a
by design behavior which follows W3C standard. There are serveral appraches
to work around this issue like change the logging to IIS Log File format or
converting the existing log files by using convlog tool.

Please refer to the following article for the details:

271196 IIS Log File Entries Have the Incorrect Date and Time Stamp
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;271196

194699 Extended Log File Format Always in GMT
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;194699

If you have any further questions or concern on this issue, please don't
hesitate to let me know.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

WenJun Zhang
