On Windows Server 2003:

I implement an ISAPI extension which proxy's http-Request from an Internet
browser to our application backend. It works fine under low but breaks under
"heavy" load.

To verify this I started 100 clients from one Server (one IP-Address). Each
one creates one request per 10 seconds. These clients run well for 8 hours.
After 8 hours all clients receive errorcode 12031 from the IIS. There is no
obvious reason for this: nothing changes in the infrastructure.

IIS now logs a lot of the following lines:

2008-02-22 11:00:41 - - - - - - - - - 124_Connections_Refused -

2008-02-22 11:00:46 - - - - - - - - - 130_Connections_Refused -

2008-02-22 11:01:21 - - - - - - - - - 125_Connections_Refused -

.... more of this to follow, repeated until now

The client -accidently, I will change this to 10 retries- keeps firing
connection requests: probably all together 120 per 5 seconds.

But why does IIS reject it. I cannot make any connection to port 80 on the
IIS. Is this to a kind of DOS defense?

Thank you for your help.

This is not a DOs defense but IIS resources wasted. See details here:

Hi,

The error occurs when kerneal NonPagedPool memory is below 20MB, http.sys
will stop to accept new requests at that time. The resolution and work
around of this issue are documented in the following article. If /3GB
switch is enabled, please consider removing it from boot.ini and monitor if
the problem still persists. Also adding EnableAggressiveMemoryUsage
registry key will give http.sys 12MB additional NonPagedPool quota. If
still no avail, you need to check if there are any potential defected
applications will cause kernel memory leak on your server.

Error message when you try to view a Web page that is hosted on IIS 6.0:
"Page cannot be displayed"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;933844

Please update here on any further issue.

Have a great week.

Sincerely,

WenJun Zhang

Sorry for my late reply,

I gave my thanks to the group through the web-browser, but this post is
missing...

I want to say thank you again: I found the problem. It was the nonpaged
memory pool. I created threads without closing the thread's handle.

That's great the problem has been resolved. If you meet any other IIS
related issues in future, please don't hesitate to post here again.

You are always welcome.
