Post subject: Host
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I am looking for a new webhost for my business site. Basically, I am paying
$30 a month right now for 50mb of storage and 2gb monthly transfer.
However, I do not have sql access among other things. To get this, I would
have to upgrade to their $75 a month plan.

This is what I'm looking for. Same storage and transfer (more would be
better), unix server with php and mysql (possibly more than one db). Most
important is uptime and fast page loads. This is a business site so uptime
and fast page loads are the most critical for me. I want a reliable host
without any games. Customer service is somewhat important although I can
solve most problems (tech wise) myself. I have been looking at Lunar Pages.
Any other recommendations or comments?

Carved in mystic runes upon the very living rock, the last words of TT
of alt.www.webmaster make plain:

Check out the Webmaster account. As for reliability, they are without
compare.

What you're paying for $30 right now is offered for less than $10 by
hundreds of hosts... and that includes MySQL and PHP.

Hello TT,

I do not have any specific recommendations, but our company has a search
feature on our website that may be of use to you in your search for a
suitable hosting company:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://thewhir.com/webhostsearch/" target="_blank">http://thewhir.com/webhostsearch/</a>

This is an advanced search, where you can enter in any features that you
require from a hosting company (diskspace, supported databases, etc).

I hope this is of help to you, and I wish you the best of luck in your
search.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.affordablehost.com" target="_blank">www.affordablehost.com</a> and <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.enhancedhost.com" target="_blank">www.enhancedhost.com</a> are always my
recommendations.

basic web hosting, no ssh login, but good tech support.

I don't have any first-hand experience with any other hosting companies,
except <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.atomhost.com" target="_blank">www.atomhost.com</a> they're a little more expensive, and tech support
isn't as fast, but you do get ssh access if you want to use it.

If you don't mind running your own virtual dedicated server, check out
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.linode.com." target="_blank">www.linode.com.</a> For $20/month you get 2gig storage, 25gig transfer,

Very cheap indeed.
But only 64 mb of RAM on the server?
That's what I'd call bare-bones!

I could've done a little research first--this from the linode.com FAQ:

"The main factor in Virtual Server performance is how many VMs are
placed on one host server. The shared-kernel methods lend to providers
stacking 100s of virtual machines on one host. A Linode 64, for example,
shares the host with a max of 30 other Linodes.

Linodes also have dedicated resources - that 64 megs of RAM is for your
Linode, and your Linode only."

So if one server has 30 Linodes, it would need at least 1.8 gig of RAM.

That's funny! I was going to offer those size accounts for $1.50. But I opted
for 5GB transfer and 400MB storage at $3.80pm.

Many hosts can provide what you need at lower cost.
We ourselves could give you 100meg storage and 2 gig transfer for $15 per
month. Includes all you want and more, (Our db is MySql but you would have 3
db on that plan) Server is linux. If you try it at that price for a month
and then wanted to upgrade to a yearly pre-paid we could double the storage
and B/W for the same price. (yearly paid includes free domain name or
transfer and additional year for an existing name.) We limit number of sites
and do not permit games or IRC type sites.

I've been with linode for w few months & love it!

Price is good, its fast & rock solid reliable, and best of all no sysadmins bleating about using resources.
