Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I am considering a career in Web page building, and from the
definitions I see I'm really interested more in the Web Developer than
the Webmaster responsibilities. Does anyone in the group has some
helpful hints or suggestions for me, as to possible courses to take,
books to buy, how to get started on such a career.
Thanks so much!

I was sitting in my big leather arm chair, watching alt.www.webmaster and thinking
how marvellous it would be to be a werewolf when mufn1 said:

I recently replied to a similar topic in a forum, so here it is...

"Hello. What would be a good idea is initally start off by doing sites
for next to nothing to build up your portfolio. For web designers, I
think this is essential. Once you have a good number of sites under
your belt, you can produce sites for the going market rate. A lot of
our own clients and designers I know have taken this approach.

As long as you can get potential customers to your site (something for
the marketing dep!) having a good portfolio is key into turning them
into sales. Try your hand at freelance work as well.

If you can back that up with a decent hosting company, you should be
on your way. (A resellers account sounds ideal, or simply purchase
hosting accounts when you need them) It is a saturated market, but if
you can produce sites with the "Wow" factor, there should be room for
your company

Good luck

Jay"

Some parts there will be relevant to you.

Good luck
Jay

Ideally to be employable in a web development career you need to be fluent
in at least one server side language and have at least a passing knowledge
in another. (PHP & ASP are the most common ones).

These can both be learned from books. How I got my job : I just walked in to
a web development job said "I know PHP" They said "prove it", I said "Fine!
Gimme money" And they did.

Or something like that =D<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
