Post subject: Help to know if it will work
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hi,

Currently we have a peer to peer network with XP/Pro, XP/home, and 2000. We
are planning to buy a Small Business Server which to be used as a IIS server
for an application software. Anybody knows if I just connect the server the
the stwich, not join the domain of the server, the current PCs in the current
workgroup can access the IIS server? We want to use this topology temporarily.

Thank you very much for any suggestions.
Cindy

As long as they're all on TCP/IP it should work.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for you reply. So you mean even the small business server doesnot
join the current workgroup because it is a domain controller, they are all on
the tcp/ip now, the PCs in the current workgroup can access the IIS server
which is on the Small business server 2003?
Because I asked the technical support for the Microsoft small business
server 2003, I was told "no. They need to be behind the SBS. If you want them
to use IIS, you have to have an SBS network set up ..... and then to get your
other clients to connect, they need to have a workgroup setup on a domain
client. You need router .... SBS ..... windows xp pro ..... (seperate
netowrk)router ...... other clients."

So, is he wrong?
Thanks very much for your help.

In order to access a web server, all the machines need to be connected to a
TCP/IP network. If they are on different networks, obviously there must be
some routable connection between them. It's really that simple. Maybe he
was confused about something or you're not explaining something fully?

Thanks Tom.
I used chat to the support. My question for him was:
Currently I have all the computers connected to a wireless router, so if I
just connect the SBS server to the router, do not join the computers to the
domain, leave them in their workgroup. Can the computers access the IIS
server?

Anyway, thanks a lot for your reply.
