alutations:

I picked up something new in the logs today - turn word
wrap off this will be easier to read:

80.142.110.85 - - [10/Oct/2003:16:58:18 -0300] "GET /error/%5c%2e%2e%5clogs%5cinstall.log HTTP/1.1" 200 1029 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"
80.142.110.85 - - [10/Oct/2003:16:58:21 -0300] "GET /error/%5c%2e%2e%5cconf%5chttpd.conf HTTP/1.1" 200 34590 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"

This successfully read both relevant files and then proceeded
to attempt:

80.142.110.85 - - [10/Oct/2003:16:58:23 -0300] "GET /cgi-bin/%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5cwinnt%5csystem32%5ccmd.exe?/c+dir+c:>>c:\dir.txt HTTP/1.1" 301 430 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"
80.142.110.85 - - [10/Oct/2003:16:58:23 -0300] "GET /cgi-bin/%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5cwinnt%5csystem32%5ccmd.exe?/c+dir+c:>>c:\dir.txt HTTP/1.1" 301 430 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"
80.142.110.85 - - [10/Oct/2003:16:58:25 -0300] "GET /cgi-bin/%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5c%2e%2e%5cwindows%5csystem32%5ccmd.exe?/c+dir+c:>>c:\dir.txt HTTP/1.1" 301 430 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"

I had been working on a 'Return to Sender' scheme some time ago
so that the 301 codes are not successful on *my* machine - however
this has all the ear marks of being fairly serious worm for windows
apache installs.. Perhaps others as well - I'm not sure - I suppose
it depends on what it knows about the system involved..

Which is pretty much everything given what it calls in the first
two lines and responses with in the subsequent three.. I haven't
tried it on *nix yet - perhaps someone should..

I am not finding anything about it at google except a locked down
German Government security forum (probe IP traces to Germany) and
a couple of Log reports from .nl and .nu..

I've kicked this to Apache and CERT as a heads up - no word back from
anyone there (it's late Friday) - soooo - I'm not sure what else to do.

I'm using a 2.+ RedirectMatch & {REMOTE_ADDR} scheme here to handle
it - if you know how - I would strongly advise you do the same adding
whatever directories or files you want protected.

Cheers and good luck.. Hope I'm wrong - not sure I am..

Totally unrelated but ... your site claims I need RealAudio 8 or free G2
to hear the stations. Lots of us hate RealAudio because of the
resources it eats so you might like to ammend your comments to include
Real Alternative as a player option. It's free and plays all those
nasty RAs and RAMs ... and it's FAST. <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://doa2.host.sk/index.htm" target="_blank">http://doa2.host.sk/index.htm</a>

Simple rule of thumb - if it aint for consumption it aint in the public
directory and if it aint in the public directory (ie doc root) then it is
inaccessable unless the permissions match.

Which means in even simpler terms - if the request is from off server it
wont work!

Anything less is a security hazard and anything more is a band aid.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Agreed - however, what this did was bypass the permissions set in win
Apache (not stock DOC/CGI-BIN root) via the Error Alias (*was* stock) and
then tried to activate cmd.exe through cgi-bin in response - which would
have been successful if I had not configured some stuff for Code Red/Klez a
while ago.

Someone else tested on *nix and it responded with a correct access error to
the probe - which is what it should have done on win apache.

Not a panic or anything - it might well be entirely win apache related -
however, given that I can't find anything deeper about it anywhere and
because it smells entirely like a worm type probe, thought I'd better kick
it out in case anyone else wants to check their logs..

If you are running apache 2.+ and want to try a test - simply cut 'N paste:

your.server.ip/error/%5c%2e%2e%5clogs%5cinstall.log into a browser

It's not hard to secure using redirectmatch - but it's closing the barn
door after the fact in my opinion.

Maybe it's just someone rattling doors.. But it's the darned 'maybe' and
'might' that bothers me. It's turned up in another AWSTATS file this
morning when I googled:

/error/%5c%2e%2e%5clogs%5cinstall.log

Anyway - that's all I have to offer. Interested if anyone else starts to
see it.

Didn't see your post at all until this reply kicked up - so forgive me for
not getting back to you. You are not on a kill list or anything. Also, the
page/site under that link errors any browser I'm willing to use. Chuckles
on me I suppose for following it - flushing cache now.

Not trying to be rude or anything - but can you provide me a link that does
work (tried softpedia - download bombed) and have you actually been able to
kick up my stream using the Real Alternative player?

I'm no Real Audio zealot or anything, but most of my regular test hamsters
use G2 RealAudio or RealOne Freebie as they are not often on Windows
platforms through the workday (having figured out how to stop those
annoying resource eating 'features' and/or actually bought the subscription
version)..

And credit where credit it due - my experience with RealAudio product and
support has been pretty good - you know, as far as media players go..

However - as not everyone can carry the subscription or free version - I'd
be glad to add a link to Real Alternative as long as I can be *sure* it
works, doesn't do anything 'new' to the listening machine and I can get
some better detail as to what platforms it supports.

Now - wondering why I'm not seeing any of your posts at alt.www.webmaster
and back on topic - you should have seen the short wave of null traffic
that just bounced off my e-mail server's anti-spam shielding from
t-dialin.net (source of subject probe).

I think I must have rung someone's bell after all.. :/ ..

Funny, I was actually thinking of YOU when I posted this ... I
remembered a thread way back when.

No problem ... I never have much of interest to say, anyway Smile

IIRC, I had the same trouble and found this link somewhere:
List of download mirrors:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm" target="_blank">http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm</a>
A few direct download links:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://fe1.edskes.com/r/realalt109.exe" target="_blank">http://fe1.edskes.com/r/realalt109.exe</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://fe3.edskes.com/realalt109.exe" target="_blank">http://fe3.edskes.com/realalt109.exe</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://fe6.edskes.com/realalt102.exe" target="_blank">http://fe6.edskes.com/realalt102.exe</a>

Yeah, it works great on your site. Before today, I had never listened
to your "stations" because of the file format and my refusal to use Real
Player. I haven't found a non-windows version but this one works on all
Windows.

I'm not knocking it ... I just find it miserable to use and found a
solution that works for me.

I don't know about the post thing. I'm not sure if it's comcast or
giganews that's slow but I've been having trouble retrieving messages

Thanks very much - seeing this message - I'll try to look into Real
Alternative in a couple of weeks..

You're welcome to tune in anytime, please let me know if you run into any
problems with the stream and Real Alternative as it's outside the QA
framework at this point. Radio Free Dexterdyne isn't so much a 'station' as
it is a thin server new media development 'project' I'm tooling with as
streaming works my server prototype harder than most things. It's
advertising free though and kinda proudly Canadian .org..

Appreciate any technical feedback if the stream buffers out or takes an
inordinately long time to kick up - it works to 28.8 connectivity (although
it will probably buffer below 56k) but shouldn't have any of that nasty
'bottom of the well' sound you get with most RealAudio.. Some of the
individual tunes are not as bright as others - some of the worst stuff is
off my personal collection of basement LP's as cleaning up the pops kinda
took it's toll.. :/ ..

If you hear something you like that you haven't heard before (or in a long,
long time) - I always recommend hitting your local record shop to see if
the remaster is any good - there's some actually great stuff coming out on
CD's. My take is that if we voted with our wallets and actually bought
*better* music, perhaps it would get the message back to the powers that be
that you can only foist so much junk on a buying pubic before everyone
finaly gives up.

My 2 cents and thanks again for the links - the spam shielding is holding
up and while I am suddenly seeing an inordinate amount of traffic from
t-dialin/dtag.de - the redirectmatch workaround I mentioned earlier *seems*
to be doing the trick on the irregular calls against the server.

Interesting times sister Judy - interesting times..
