Post subject: HTTP Compression in IIS 5.0 .
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello ,

I have IIS 5.0 running on our test web server and we would
like to test the Http compression for our web sites before
deploying on production .
Although i have set the compression in the IIS master
properties , it is somehow not able to compress any
application and static files . I cannot see any files
compressed in the temporay compressed folder which it
creates. I am referring to the standard Microsoft document
available on the website .

Need some assistance in getting it resolved . Does the
compression depend on any other factor ? Our content is
mostly static which is ideal for compression .
Any thoughts in this regard ?

Thanks a lot .
Yatin.

I'm not familiar with compression, but check this out:

Missing in the IIS Manager at the website, virtual directory, and even file
level, granular compression is often a mis-understood and un-used feature in
IIS 6.0. This webcast will focus on comparing and contrasting compression as
it exists in IIS 5.0 versus 6.0. The compression extension list, to be
discussed in detail, is small by default on IIS 6.0 and configuration
changes are often needed to extend the compression method to common web
extensions such as .xml, .js, .cfm, etc. Since the IIS Manager lacks the
configuration areas, this webcast will explore the command-line tools
available and also other ways to extend the extension list and also enable
at various levels of the web server in IIS 6.0. Where appropriate, we will
also make reference to the overall administration and maintenance costs that
can be drastically lowered with the use of compression.

Do you have the compression filter in the list of global filters? Can you
check (using adsutil) the values for
w3svc/filters/compression/parameters/hcdostaticcompression and
w3svc/filters/compression/gzip/hcdostaticcompression, also the compressed
files in "IIS Temporary Compressed Files" folder are hidden, so you need to
do "dir /a" to view them.
