Post subject: HELP!! My host's evaporated
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi all,
In January 2002 I registered the domain 3gsite.net, bought in a package
deal with basic web and email hosting from Totalise Hosting
(www.domainnamesales.co.uk). I renewed the 12 month deal in January this
year, because I was pleased with the value for money I got from them. They
didnt update the contact details as I requested when I renewed (I changed
ISP in the middle of last year, making the email address originally supplied
invalid), but I didn't think much of it.

This afternoon my email app. went through the motions of checking each of my
servers, but rejected on my hosted email (could not find server or similar
error). My connection is fine apart from this, so I checked my website...
www.3gsite.net, also offline when attempting to connect through http. ftp
connections gave server could not be found errors too.

Indicating this might be a major problem, www.domainnamesales.co.uk is
offline at present too. I emailed the whois admin contact for
domainnamesales.co.uk from my university account, but what else can I do? I
have paid for my domain and hosting until January.

What contact details?
If you mean your domain, that's between you and your registrar. In this
case, joker.com.

If you whois 3gsite.net, you will see the email field has
dylan.mouratsing.TakeThisOut@btopenworld.com listed. This email address hasnt been in
use for at least a year... When I came to renew my hosting/name package the
form had a space for amendments to details. I included the change but
nothing came of it (I don't think DomainNameSales know of my recent
addresses at all, they never respond to my email, and I don't get the
newsletters/information I used to get to my old address. Phoning them didn't
help on this matter either).

I'd check this again, and e-mail them if your contact information hasn't
updated yet. Please keep in mind that it may take anything from a 24 hours
to a full week until the changes in the domain WHOIS database have been
updated everywhere.

I can reach your website just fine by HTTP, and your FTP server responded as
well. This could've been just a temporary problem, or even a routing problem
somewhere along the path from your ISP to your server. How long had the
problem occurred until your first post about the problem?

> Indicating this might be a major problem, www.domainnamesales.co.uk is

You could of course try calling them, but since their phone number is
apparently only available on their website, I'd write this number down
somewhere (found on the left hand side on their website):
Support - 0906 701 0002 (50p per minute)

That tip goes for all of you: write down your webhost's phone number (if you
haven't already), just in case there should be a problem.

If this problem was indeed not solvable, and your hosting provider had gone
out of business, your money would be lost anyway. However, domain
registrations are transferrable, and you'd be able to continue hosting your
website at a different hosting provider. One thing to remember: you don't
necessarily have to buy a hosting solution and domain registration at the
same company; however, it's just easier for those who only want one company
to relate to regarding their website from a technical point of view.

First of all I would re check everything. From here your web site and ftp
are responding as they should. A dns check shows that your name servers are
set correctly. That your IP is accessible and that your http, ftp and
mailservers respond correctly.

Having said that as you no longer have the original 'registrants' e-mail
addy I would strongly recommend you go to joker.com and log into their
service zone where you will be able to update your contact e-mail for
'registrant'. You will need your login in passwords etc that should have
been supplied to you when you signed up.

Yes it all seems to be working now... but the outage was at least 1.5 to
2hrs. People I have given my email address to (which has been reliable 'til
now) should not be expected to re-send because of my host's stuff-up.
Unfortunately that seems like the only option.

I think domainnamesales.co.uk act as a reseller for joker.com ... I don't
have any logins with them at all, and have never dealt with them directly.

Downtimes might be expected at any point, either due to extreme maintenance,
hardware failures, temporary routing issues, etc. I'd only worry if your
website has been offline for at least 24 hours. That way, you can be sure
your hosting provider has real problems, and not just a small technical
issue.

I wouldn't worry about your e-mail, though. Mail that has been sent during
the downtime period will just be queued at the senders' outgoing mail (SMTP)
servers until YOUR mail server is available. Depending on the setup of those
SMTP servers, they may hold the messages in queue for about 3 days (at least
that seems to be the common setting) until it's deleted from the queue, in
which case the sender is notified about it and might have to re-send the
message.

Why not ask domainnamesales.co.uk if they have somewhere you can log in to
make sure your contact information is updated?

And if they promise 99% uptime they have about 6 hours left this year to be
down.

maybe they were just using up the allocation from last year.

Maybe it's like cell phone minutes and they have rollover outage minutes to
use up.
