Post subject: How to tell Google to update a URL
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I moved a site from somedomain.com/sitename to sitename.com. (After
residing in a subdirectory of another domain for a few years, it now has
its own domain name.) The old URL now contains only a single page that
informs the user of the new URL and contains a link to the new URL. If
you do a Google search on the site's most common search terms, the old
URL is listed number 7. The new URL is listed number 19. Incoming links
point to both URLs.

I'd like to see Google list the new URL at number 7 and ignore the old
URL. Is there a way to tell Google that somedomain.com/sitename is now
at sitename.com?

Use a 301 redirect.

If I set up a redirect through Control Panel, will that cause a 301
redirect header to be sent?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

After a little Googling, I found out that it does. I also found a link I
can use to confirm that:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php" target="_blank">http://www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php</a><!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

While sitting in a puddle Scott Bryce scribbled in the mud:

Checked one of my sites.

HTTP/1.1 200 OK =>
Date => Wed, 29 Dec 2004 23:42:20 GMT
Server => Hi Kids!
X-Powered-By => PHP/4.3.10
Connection => close
Content-Type => text/html; charset=iso-8859-1
