Post subject: Google and change of URL
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I am pushing both the space and throughput limitations of the hosting
service provided by my ISP, so at some point I will have to move, and in
the process change the domain of my web site.

This will at least temporarily reduce the visibility of my site on
Google. What can I do to minimise this? other than

1) Set the old pages to redirect to the new.
2) Email everyone that I know links to my pages to let them know the new
URL.

I note that I changed the URL for the Lavatera section, and the position
on Google for that corresponding keyword has been drifting down ever
since; last I looked it was the 10th site, down from 1st 6 months ago. I
don't suppose that it helps that the Google directory listing hasn't
been updated (even tho' DMOZ has).

Sounds like you have everything covered there. I would point out that if
you wish to reduce this problem in the future, then you are best getting a
proper domain name for your site so that you don't have to worry about
moving from one host to another.
