If you check out the Starting Point directory their http://www.stpt.com/ has
a PR8
but
http://stpt.com has a PR5
Now first of all, I'm wondering if anyone knows if linking to starting point
and paying their $10 fee to be linked is worth it? Is a link from a PR8
page actually worth paying for?
Also, how does google count a link from a PR8 page to my site if it's a
directory list like Starting Point? Or is the PR all that matters? Anyone
know how it affects my rankings, and by how much?
Finally, will I get credit for the pr8 or pr5 ranking from google on this
particular site.
Thanks,

I say NO! Don't pay!
In all my days of promotion ... I have never paid any search engine or
anywhere for that matter to be included in a directory of any sort.
What I have done is read as much as I can on choosing just the right
keywords .... what would be the best way to create meta tags, the
best way to optimise for search engines and what have you.
I have looked at everything I could look at on the web. From ezines
to ebooks. I have searched this subject until I was blue in the face! I
wish I had the money to where I could hire some top search engine
optimisation company to do the work for me - but, realistically
speaking - such is not the case. So, I am stuck with this dastardly
chore. But, sometimes - doing this work yourself brings somewhat
of a feeling of self satisfaction.
Also, I do employ the works of addweb pro and submitwolf pro to
aid me in my quest of search engine placement. Both software seem
to do a pretty good job. My placement in the engines is not bad.
Could be better I suppose ... However, I do not place all that shabby
on yahoo! or google.
Just be willing to put some effort into it. If you are not that willing to
put
some extra effort into your search engine positioning ... you will probably
not fair so well.
Hope this helped.
Cheers!

All good questions and I can't answer any of them, but I was wondering where
you saw the $10 fee.

LOL. Hope someone can answer them
Here's part of the email I received from starting point along with the link
to where I saw the fee to guarantee placement:
---------------------
you submitted your website to Starting Point. As you know, your site was
featured in the New Sites section of the site. You now have the opportunity
to have your site permanently listed in the directory. You can guarantee
your placement at the top of the Starting Point directory, search engine and
enhance your listing.

Hey TS. Actually the page ranking on that site is only affected when typing
either
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.site.com" target="_blank">http://www.site.com</a>
or
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://site.com" target="_blank">http://site.com</a>
regardless of the following / from what I can tell.
It's wierd though...I don't see how that affects the site's rank since it's
the same page.
Cheers

Hi,
No, because the links don't go to your site. View source and you get
this-
<A HREF="/bin/frame_redirect.php?IPF_URL=sportsshopproducts.itctv.com"
CLASS=sitename_premier><B>
You will receive no benefit from this other than direct visitors from
the site. If you get a load of visitors from your free listing that
will tell you if it's worth paying for.
>Also, how does google count a link from a PR8 page to my site if it's a
>directory list like Starting Point?
It would if it was a standard link like this-
<a
href="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ooar123/search-engine-optimization/">Search
Engine Optimization</a>
A link like this would transfer PR to this page-
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ooar123/search-engine-optimization/" target="_blank">http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ooar123/search-engine-optimization/</a> and
give the page a boost for the SERP "Search Engine Optimization" and
any related phrases like Search Engine Placement since all/most of the
words are used as the anchor text.
>Or is the PR all that matters?
No, PR is important, but it's just as important that you get your
keywords in the anchor text and the page isn't filled with lots of
other links. If a page has 300 links off it then any benefit it can
pass on is being shared between those 300 links, so if you have one
link you get only 1/300th of the possible benefit.
If a page has just three links off it and one is yours you get 1/3rd
of the possible benefit.
If you research PR you'll find a link from a PR4 page with a small
number of links off it (under 10) is worth more than a link from a PR8
page with 1000 links off it. This is why free for all pages are
generally worthless as 99.99% of them have a lot of links off them and
also have low PR.
>Anyone
>know how it affects my rankings, and by how much?
Well if you get a PR8 link and there was only a small number of links
from that page and you got your keywords in the anchor text. Then your
SERPs for the keywords in the anchor text could benefit a LOT.
Also the page in question would at least become a PR7 and you'd also
get quite a few PR6s and loads of PR5s on your site (assuming you have
a hierarchial structure).
And if you used keyword rich anchor text for links within your site,
you'd probably see a dramatic increase in traffic from Google and
engines using Googles database within a few months.
The above can also be achieved by getting a fair number of medium PR
links (PR4s, PR5s and PR6s) to your site and optimising most of your
pages for Google.
This is how I do it and my main site gets around 5000 unique visitors
a day, all I need to learn now is how to make a lot of money from them
 )

No.

My 2 cents:
Pretty Good rank for search engines isn't rocket science:
For the web page in question:
Meaningful Title with key words.
Proper meta description including the same keywords.
Proper meta keywords including the same keywords.
Body content which includes the same keywords.
Excellent agreement of keywords in all the above help a lot!
Have external web pages link to your web page under consideration.
Get the web page listed in dmoz.org
This is simple work, sometimes careful work. Just do it.
The results will come with a little time, patients, and care.

Hi,
Very true.
>For the web page in question:
>Meaningful Title with key words.
If we are just talking search engine and not visitors then your main
keyword or keyword phrase for that page should be in the title. Each
page should target a very small number of phrases (ideally one word),
unless you know what you are doing then you can do well for dozens of
phrases with one page.
>Proper meta description including the same keywords.
Not required and for ranking ignored by most search engines including
Google. google sometimes lists the description on the results pages,
so worth having one that reads well to potential visitors, don't
optimize it for keywords though as it doesn't help.
>Proper meta keywords including the same keywords.
Not required and for ranking ignored by most search engines including
Google. I very rarely use the meta keywords now.

Helps to have the keywords in the body text, but not essential.

Yes, using the same keywords in the title as anchor text. For deep
pages that are unlikely to be linked to by other sites be sure to use
keyword rich anchor text for internal links, not words like Click
Here, Home or Next etc..... as it's a wasted opportunity.
>Get the web page listed in dmoz.org
Not required, DMOZ is just another link and for a lot of categories
not particularly useful with very low PR and lots of links off the
page.
Best advice for DMOZ is find the highest PR page which your site fits
into and submit, then forget about it. If you get the link great, if
not there are plenty of other places to get links.

Most important thing for google right now is links using your keywords
as the anchor text. This alone can give a page a significant boost in
it's SERPs.

A PR8 with only a few links I'd pay that amount for. But as Dave said if the
page has 100+ links it isn't worth it. Also, just because the front page is
PR8 does not mean the page that you will be listed on is a PR8. Check out
that page before you do anything.

I think you're worrying about all the wrong kind of stuff. Concentrate
on building a good site of your own, not trying to get reflected glory
from someone else's.

But without links a site will go no where in the search engines. You
can have a great site, brilliant keyword rich content, everything
SEO'd correctly, but without links it will fail in Google.
You can take a brand new domain, put nothing on it, spam a load of
blogs with comment spam (with the keywords in the anchor text) and get
that domain quite high for a competitive phrase in a few months. This
is without having a single page on the site.
So content helps, but's not as important as other factors (PR and
anchor text).
