Hi,

I'd like to know if you can suggest a free CMS for personal use, which
fullfills the following requirements:

- it must be free
- PHP based
- Support for discussion-bord-like tags such as
...
and
...
- W3C standard compliant
- should have a menubar
- themeable

Any Wiki-like functionality would also be nice, but is not necessary.
I already tried phpWS, which looked good at first, but turned out to be
not as usable as I thought initially.

I need a CMS to serve as a personal platform for publishing technical
articles, that's why I'd really like to have functionality to deal with
code snippets properly.
It doesn't have to be designed for high load, as only me and maybe a
couple of my pals will use it.

Thanks in advance,
Matthias

Doesn't PHPNuke have these sort of features? I'm supposed to be looking
into this myself, but I've not had time yet.

I'm not sure about the quote and code features.
Besides, PHPNuke is extremely non-conforming. A HTML validation turned
up 596 errors. ^^

I want to make sure that the website I'm hosting will be displayed
correctly by all (major) graphical browsers, that does especially mean
for non-MS browsers like Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, Epiphany, Konqueror, etc.

On top of that, my website will deal with open source software and open
standards, so it would look pretty poor if the website itself would turn
out to be not standard compliant Smile

Any other suggestions? It may as well be something less bloated,
PHPNuke's 50MB is already pretty much (I have 250MB, so this shouldn't
be an issue though).

Yes, as mentioned in my post, I already tried it, actually I have it
installed right now. I don't feel it suits my needs though, e.g. you
can only post documents in plain text format and it doesn't have
features such as quoting and code printing and these two points are
pretty central to the concept of my site.

Hi Matthias,

Wordpress is one of my faves... It's marketed for bloggers, but it's
great to run an entire website with plus with some HTML and PHP skills
you can really customize it to your needs.

You can write your own Smile My forte is actually ColdFusion where I've
written a NICE fully functional CMS for our company (I like it better
then any PHP options), but it's in CF. I'm in the process of rewriting
it in PHP to share with folks, but it'll be some time before it's ready
since my PHP skills are lacking. Anyway, this is another option.

Thanks for all your replies, appreciated.

However, none of your suggestions seem to provide the features I
requested, especially formatting code blocks and generally allowing for
easy posting and maintaining of technical articles, which is what I need.

I think it's pretty strange, I roughly looked at about 20 different CMS
now, and none of them seemed to provide the means for posting code or
quoting, like every common discussion board software can do.

Maybe there simply is no such software, which would be very unfortunate.

Seriously, I would if I wouldn't lack skill and time. However, I'm
already devoting a good part of my spare time to a GPL'ed Linux
filemanager I'm currently developing, so I guess this won't be possible Smile

Best regards,
Matthias

Take a look at www.websitebaker.com. It's very user friendly, yet
powerful. It has wysiwyg, so you can format code anyway you like.
