Hi

Firstly, sorry for the cross-post.

And now for my question:
I am going to install a MS 2003 Server as a web server shortly.
Unfortunatly our budget doesnt stretch to a standalone firewall, so can
anyone suggest a good, but resonably priced software one that will protect
my server from hacking gits and also log access etc?

I only have a single PC so bear this in mind with your suggestions.

Thank-you v.much.

John

If you can't afford a real firewall appliance, get at least a NAT router
device with SPI and a the ability to block IP's.

Make sure that you really understand how to secure a web server and make
sure that you don't put it in your AD Domain, etc....

If I were you, I would want to different networks for this.

A real firewall, something that can block attacks and such, can be as
cheap as $1700 and has two interfaces (other than the WAN) - one for DMZ
and one for LAN.

Well, Server 2003 comes with a firewall, you could use that. Kerio
Personal Firewall is also popular. I'm not fond of firewalls on the
system they are supposed to protect, and you may want to look at a
separate product such as IP Cop (Free, you provide any old PC to run
it on...) or a SOHO firewall for a few hundred bucks.

Ditch Microsoft, install Linux and Apache and with the money you have saved
buy a half decent hardware firewall?

You should get a Nat router that has SPI that can Block IP's. You should
secure the Win 2K3 O/S and IIS.

You can use IPsec that's on the O/S behind the NAT router to help secure
the machine. IPsec can block inboubd or outbound by IP, port, protcol,
DNS, etc, etc.
