For some reason, I can't FTP access databases - I've just swapped to a new
machine and swapped all the relevant databases to the new machine, but if I
try to FTP any of them to my webspace, it gets to about 30K of database and
then stops.

I've tried different FTP spaces, different FTP programs, I've recreated the
databases on my new machine all to no avail - any other type of file FTPs
fine.

Any ideas?

No 100% sure I know what you're taling about, however..........

There may be a file up load limit. Try splitting your db uploads and see
what happens or try checking the control panel for upload limits.

No, space is not a problem, can upload files of any other type and size, and
makes no difference binary/ASCII

My host has webshell3 and tried using that and it won't upload them either -
really strange.

Any further ideas welcome.
