I'm wondering what the difference between a hit, a "visit",
and especially a "page view" is.

I'm using CPanel.

A page view is exactly what it say's....A single view of a page....
A hit is generally a request of the server.....A browser has to request each
individual element of a webpage separately, such as images and stuff.....So
a single page view might generate 20 requests for elements of that
page.....In this instance 1 page view = 20 hits.....
Visits are generally unique visits.....So if a single IP address has viewed
12 pages on your website, it will still only get logged as 1 visit, as the
stats recording application knows it's the same person.....

The same IP address, NOT the same person. It is misleading to think
that IP address equals person.

A far safer approach is to be cynical of web site 'stats', and
consider them only in terms of relative strains upon the http server
and bandwidth.

Ok, thanks.

I just paid $25,- to a company that sells traffic, specifially
"10,000 hits".

At first Awstats (CPanel) registered 1000 more hits than
the day before, but no more visitors.
Recent days however, I did notice a larger number of
actual visitors, both through Awstats, and through the
website of the referral programs I use.

Those schemes are normally a waste of time and money....You've no way of
knowing if the traffic you're buying is relevant to your site.....I mean,
what would be the point of me buying 10,000 visitors to my gadgets website,
if 99% of those visitors have no interest in gadgets whatsoever?......

Quite. I guess you measure the success of your site not in terms of
visitors, but in terms of sales, or perhaps more importantly profit
from sales?

For us, as we primarily make money from selling advertising space,
visitors are important, but they need to be sustainable repeat
visitors, not one-offs tricked to the site who vsit every page in one
day and never return. We make no revenue from that.

Spot on Matt.....High traffic is all well and good, but it's conversions
that we're really interested in.....That's why we drive our own traffic
using services like Kelkoo and other price comparison services.....That way
we know our traffic is already motivated to buy our kind of merchandise....
When it comes to profit, we don't actually make that much from each
sale.....We're working on the principle that it's better to have hundreds of
small profits than just one big profit.....
