Last night, the DNS server that my ISP uses died and so did the backup
one! So I was wondering if anyone knows of a good, reliable set of
UK alternatives that I can use instead of or in addition to the ones I am
currently using?
TIA

This one isn't UK but NS3 is in the Netherlands, the other 3 are stateside.
I've been using them for several domains for nearly a year now and they've
proven to be reliable so far.

No idea. Trying to contact my ISP is like trying to catch flies with
chopsticks I just found that I suddenly couldn't access anything, but
noticed that irc was still connected so the connection was okay. It was
just not possible to connect to anything new without knowing the IP
off-hand.

Hmm, I think I need to reword what I asked
I don't have any problems with the DNS for my domains, but the one that my
ADSL provider gives me to resolve domains when I am trying to access the
Internet -- i.e. the one that I put in the settings for my router!

ahh - ok. DNS is still mostly an open service, for a temporary outage you
can use almost any name server you like. For more regular usage it is
considered good form to ask the admin for permission.

# OpenNIC - Europe
nameserver 217.115.138.24
nameserver 62.236.208.158
nameserver 213.185.37.13
# OpenNIC - Rest of World
nameserver 207.6.128.247
nameserver 61.206.130.242
nameserver 202.89.131.4

I do all my registrations with <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.123-reg.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.123-reg.co.uk/</a> using their
nameservers, never ever had a problem with them, quick response from support
when I've asked for help, and their prices are very good by UK standards.

The question is about resolvers not name servers for domain hosting.
For UK resolvers you could try Demon:
158.152.1.58
158.152.1.43

Cheers, I've stuck them as my tertiary and quaternary backups Hopefully
next time my own host's DNS buggers up (it's happened twice AFAIR) these
two will stop me from encountering too many problems

That sounds like a good idea... any pointers as to how I would go about
doing that?

i'd really like to get technical so i could impress the hell out of you
but all i did was do a trace route to some random location to see who
was on the next hop from my ISP and googled for their DNS IPs.
