hi

I have a bit of a dilema.

The company who hosts my site has changed the IP address that points
to their name servers.

Now my domain host has the corect name allocated BUt somewhere it must
store the Ip allocated to that address also as it it still wrong.

what I need to know is how to get the IP allocated to a name server
altered...............if all this makes sense.

Thanks in advance
Regards Andy T

Assuming you use your hosts name servers for your domain?

Most domain name records, (at your registrar), record only the name servers
by name, i.e. ns1.nameserver.com . If your registrar is one who also
requires the IP# then you will need to log into your registrars client
control panel and change the IP# that points to the name servers.

As far as the IP# of the domain name server being allocated - that is
something your host has done and, assuming your host also owns the domain to
which the dns belong then your host is the only one who can change the IP#
within the dns zone file.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

MMmm perhaps. I am getting very confused about what I do do at
present :

First I did not register the domain. I do have access to UKreg to
.....Modify Name Servers for: dcracing.co.uk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Primary Name Server:
ns3.mywebworx.com (No IP Address)

Secondary Name Server:
ns4.mywebworx.com (No IP Address)

which used to point to............69.61.24.8
and 69.61.24.9

BUT now has to change to

.. ns3.mywebworx.com has to change to 69.6124.8
..
and n4.mywebworx.com has to change to 69.61.24.9

But as UKreg will only accept the names and not IP I am stuck.

If thats Ukreg

Registrant's Agent:
Fasthosts Internet Limited [Tag = FASTHOSTS]
URL: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.fasthosts.co.uk" target="_blank">http://www.fasthosts.co.uk</a>

Then it will NOT accept and IP for a name server

What has happended is that the hosting company for my site has changed
the Ip relating to the name servers.

So....ns3.mywebworx.com was 69.61.24.8 but now is....

Update............

If I do a whois on

dcracing.co.uk

It now shows the correct IP address for the HOST but I still can not
see the web site using <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.dcracing.co.uk" target="_blank">www.dcracing.co.uk</a> in a browser. How long does
it take to propogate around the world so I can see the web site
again??

OR is there something I am still missing!??

thanks in advance.

Most people can see their own site within a day or two after changing the
DNS settings. Full propagation takes about a week.

thanks for the reply. A week is pathetic though surely when an email
takes seconds.........why the wait??

Also I have not really changed my/the DNS setting but my host has
acquired new ones and the old name servers pointed to the wrong
address when I did a whois on dcracing.co.uk.

thanks again for your time

Some DNS servers just don't update very often. You asked about world-wide.

If I didn't see the effects of a change I made within two days. I'd be
looking for some other reason why it's not working.

i.e.
Your ISP may be cacheing pages. I think if you hold down the shift key and
hit refresh it will try to fetch the site again.

Your host may not have configured the zone file* correctly.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci811293,00.html" target="_blank">http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci811293,00.html</a>
A zone file is a small set of instructions for resolving specified Internet
domain names to the appropriate number form of an Internet Protocol address
(an IP address). These instructions are ordinarily quite simple and reside
in a file on the server that administers a site.

It has the same effect then.

To be more accurate the zone file is located on the dns that is authoitive
for the domain. That is where the action of resolving the IP# from the
domain name occur. In some cases that may be the same server as the host
server but more often not. Once the name has propagated any dns, including
ISP dns may have a 'copy' of the zone file if it has been requested for the
IP#. If it has not it will do a look up to the 'authoritative name server
for a copy of the zone file. In all cases except the authoritative server
the local dns may have an outdated copy of the zone file which is why
sometimes a site cannot be reached due to a visitors reliance on their ISPs
dns. A simple workaround is to use dns higher up the hierarchy<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
