I saw a report on the television the other day that Al Qaeda operate a
web site, complete with forum &c. which they host by squatting on
other people's web servers without their knowledge or permission. This
got me wondering, how do they do that? What should a web master look
for to detect squatters on their server?

Matt

First of all, Al Qaeda have no need to do that - they have enough grunt and
connections to be able to have several floating sites disperesed in neutral
jurisdictions

Second - it is very simple to get a front person to rent a minimulist site
with a host the provides cpanel. Once that it is done, usinf the front
persons shell access or php it is not too difficult to place files in other
peoples web space. If one knows enough about *nix one can also make those
files 'invisible to all but the most astute *nix exponant.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

My mistake. I was talking from memory. It wasn't the bbc that was
hijacked, it was British Airways. Yes, pun.

From the link:

"Mail order brides are not BA's normal line of business. "

Would have thought this was right up their street. LOL

Indeed, perhaps it wasn't such a violation after all!
