We ended up going with goEMerchant
(http://www.netauctionhelp.com/goemerchant.asp).
They offer some nice services for "beginners" needing e-commerce stuff, but
also have a good API for doing your own thing. We actually ended up having
them tie us into Authorize.Net because of stronger AVS options, card number
options, reporting, coming-soon auto-rebilling, and even better API stuff.
And, we do custom web software and it's much easier to integrate with
Authorize.Net than some others.
Check out the fees and such at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.netauctionhelp.com/goemerchant.asp" target="_blank">http://www.netauctionhelp.com/goemerchant.asp</a>
and see how they compare with what you're after.
Best of luck,
