Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Say a client of mine is a chiropractor from Richmond. We're building him a
website. I'm trying to decide whether to get VancouverChiropractor.com
(example) or RichmondChiropractor.com. Richmond is about 30 minutes away
from Vancouver, and is a small suburb. VancouverChiropractor.com would be
more search-engine friendly than RichmondChiropractor.com (nobody'd search
for "richmond chiropractor") but since he's not actually in Vancouver, what
would be the best choice? Could we get both, and use some technique not to
get penalized by the various engines?

Thanks
HC
PS - I know VancouverChiropractor.com is taken - just used this as an
example Surprised)

I assume you mean Vancouver, Canada (where I live), which has a
suburb named Richmond, a busy city with a population of about
168,000?

AFAIK it's only a theory that words in domain names count as
keywords.

(nobody'd search
: for "richmond chiropractor")

Don't be so sure of that. I created a site for a Vancouver
veterinarian. The domain name has no keywords, but I put both
"Vancouver" and "veterinarian" in the title. The site gets hits for
"vancouver veterinarian" and for "west vancouver veterinarian." (As
you know, West Vancouver is another suburb and a separate city.) If I
lived in Richmond, I'd use "Richmond" as a search term.

The title tag is very valuable for SEO. Whenever I've added more
words to the title tag, the page has gotten more hits via search
terms. Be sure to put "Canada" in the title tag too -- there's more
than one "Richmond" in the world. And more than one "Vancouver" too.

Also submit the site to local directories. If you put "Richmond" in
the anchor text or in the description, that will help you get hits
for "Richmond chiropractor."

That will do absolutely nothing to help him get listed with the search
engines.

Don't rely on your domain name for search engine listings anyway...put some
solid content and work on your title tags. Someone gave me that advice
awhile ago, and its worked perfectly for me!

so get vancouver-chiropractor.com which is better because it will be treated
as two words when being indexed. You should also get richmond-
chiropractor.com

Going with "VancouverChiropractor.com" wouldn't make any sense...

If somebody is in Richmond and was looking for a chiropractor they would
probably search Google (or whatever engine) for "Richmond chiropractor".
The same is for Surrey... Burnaby... Coquitlam... Delta... people are going
to search for what will get them results... By your logic you seem to think
that if somebody goes to Google and is looking for a certain business in
"Burnaby" they would instead search for Vancouver because its the nearest
big city.

When picking a domain name you might want to think about how the client is
mainly going to be drawing people to his/her website. If its by business
cards, yellow pages ads or advertising on the radio then you don't want a
long domain name and nor do you want one with dashes in it...

If they want the majority of their traffic to come from the internet then
you might want a domain name that is more search friendly and in this case
dashes won't really matter too much. But... you do have to consider where
the users are coming from. If he is hoping to draw users from outside the
Lower Mainland then maybe going with "Vancouver" would be handy because to
somebody in Tacoma, WA or Eugene, OR isn't going to know where Richmond
is... But if he is hoping to get most of the site users from within the
GVRD then he wouldn't want "Vancouver" because its misleading (Somebody
living at Denman and Beach who might want a chiropractor is probably going
to look for one in the English Bay area... they aren't going to search for
one out in Langley or Cloverdale... likewise somebody in Richmond might want
one down off Number 3 Road and has no interest in one located at Granville
and Broadway)

And... if they are mainly doing it for email then you might want to go with
something totally differnt that is easy to remember, like <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.drbob.com" target="_blank">www.drbob.com</a> or
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.VanChiro.com" target="_blank">www.VanChiro.com</a> or something like that where the domain name doesn't really
matter<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Very true. There's at least 6 in Australia alone. Smile

Obviously you failed to even google for either.
"ricmond chiropractic" turned up more hits than vancouver did.
So if ya wants to be found easier, go with the one with fewer hits.
But then, are people looking for chiropractics willing to drive out of the
way for one?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I just picked a couple of random city names to illustrate the example - but
yes, that is the Vancouver I meant Smile

Did I say it would? Please dont put words in my "mouth". The 301 will
redirect the people to the right domain and if google sees the redirected
one it wont punish him.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'd forget having a nasty, long domain like richmondchiropracter or anything
similar....

It's almost irrelevant in SEO terms - the big engines look for content, not
the domain name...

I'd use something smaller and more snappy, which customers might have a
fighting chance of remembering.

Perhaps www.fredblogs.com, or www.somethingclinic.com etc... If he trades by
name, use his name in there; if he trades by a business name, use it.

If the content states in the right places that he is a Chiropracter from
Richmond in Vancouver, he will be indexed as such. And no crappy long-winded
domain name is going to bump him up the rankings....

Who the hell is going to type in the url if they are searching. First they
would have to find you. splitting up the two words can push you up a bit.
Besides, everybody knows that chiropractor is just a fancy word for quack.
