Post subject: Attempting to Create Username/Password Protect in FrontPage
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I use a little public Javascript to create a minimal security
username/password access. It's one that requires the script to be
pasted between the <body> </body> tags. The user name = the directory
name and the password = the *.html file it contains which is the
actual page it is password protecting. It works fine for the limited
minimal security I need. Today a friend asked if I could set this up
to protect a similar minimum security page for her. When I went over
to do it I realized she was using FrontPage. When I pasted the script
between the <body> </body> tags and went to the page in a browser all
it did was show me all of the code I had edited into the file instead
of the usual username/password box. When I looked at the html code
again I noticed a lot of added coding. I take it that this might me
the FrontPage tags I've seen ref to? My question is, can I over come
this and get this to work or is there a better way for her to password
protect her desired web page? I'm not a fan of FrontPage and was
really struggling to help. I couldn't. I'm hoping you can. Thanks in
advance for any help you might share.

Impossible - even minimal is too strong a word.

Even fp pages can execute server side scripts.

Of course you know that you should be losing the fp nonsense, but perhaps
that's for another day.

Trust me when I say that I AM NO FAN OF FP. I simply was asked for a
helping hand and am turning to the good folks of this group for a
little assistance. If you can, THANKS. If you can't then THANKS
ANYWAY.

Yes you can.

1) IIRC there is a paste special or something of that ilk that opens up a
pop-up and you paste that. It then inserts it into the page as HTML. Have a
nose around, you'll see what I mean.

2) reopen the file and see if FP has CHANGED your pasted code. It does that.
look carefully, it can throw it all over the page, but normally isolated
lines appear around the body tag ( That was in older versions of FP, not
sure about now)

3) from the file list right click and select "open with" (or similar) and
select NOTEPAD.EXE. edit the file in Notepad and just hit save. FP will
automatically upload it if you are connected to the web.

4) Keep your fingers crossed. ;o)

Sir Bobby;
Thank you so much for your info. I will give it a try and see if I can
get it to work. Your help is much appreciated.

Mr Mercier - Seriously, take comments like mine with a grin - roll your
eyes, even, if it makes you feel better Smile Heaven knows if you stick
around in this NG long enough, you'll find enough about my own writings
to poke fun at, too - I promise, I'll laugh with you Smile

Marc - Worry not. I have a thick hyde and will endure and yes, give me
a tee shot and you're future fair game.
Thanks for the response.
